InactiveWell, Quinn got sick last night. Really sick. It progressed so rapidly yesterday. She was just fine the day before, but yesterday in the morning, I took her temp and it was okay, just 100.3, I gave her tylenol and a couple hours later took her temp again. 102.4. I took off all her clothes and let her run around in a diaper. I gave her another dose of tylenol around the time she was supposed to take it again. Then I gave her a bath. Then a couple hours later I took her temp again, it was 103.1. She started coughing an aweful lot. She was so hot. Very flushed and her skin was blotchy.
I watched her until it was time for bed. Bedtime couldn’t have been any worse. Her temp went up to 104.4 and she had taken tylenol just about an hour before that temp. The tylenol was obviously not working.
She wouldn’t lay down to go to sleep. She coughed and it was a deep down rumbly in the chest cough. Her nose was really stuffy. I took her out of bed because she couldn’t sleep. She was breathing so hard, I could hear her all the way downstairs. Then I could tell that she was having just a little bit of difficulty breathing. After she coughed she couldn’t catch her breath. I had to suction her throat out and blow in her face. She scared the crap out of me after that. I called my dad and he told me that her temp is too high and she needs to go to the doctor.
Unfortunately, it was after hours. I had to take her to the ER. We were there for almost six hours. we had to wait until her temp went down. They gave her some motrin and took a chest xray and drew some blood. gave her tylenol.
Her xray looked good. Her blood work was okay. The doctor told us that she had an upper respiratory infection and an acute fever that successfully went down. He said that tylenol doesn’t work for all kids and motrin should work for her. Her O2 sats were around 95%, but they said that she should be okay. He said that he heard a little tightness in her chest and so we should watch for signs of pneumonia ex: retractions, wheezing, lethargy. But that she should do better within a few days.
After we got home, I took her temp again because she was really cold and sweating. It was 94.4 and she was very pale. Took it about an hour later and it climbed up to 96.1 and then this morning it was very normal. She was probably just sweating off the fever.
And she is doing much much better today. She of course has a cough, some puffy eyes, runny stuffy nose… an occasional fever that goes down with motrin… but today, she is doing much better. And we got some antibiotics for her upper respiratory infection too.
It was so weird because we went to the same ER that we went to back in Feb. when she was hospitalized. That was weird. So many memories came back. But we had a good outcome… no hospitalization. I was so afraid of that. I’m kinda liking the whole heart staying in my chest thing rather than dropping to the floor everytime a doctor comes out to talk to me.
So now we are expecting a good recovery!
QUESTION: Can upper respiratory infections be linked to reflux?

InactiveSarah –
How scary – so happy things turned out OK. Those ER’s and hospitals are so nervewracking. Kayla had to be in the hospital when she was 2 due to fever, throwing up and diarrhea now every time she throws up, all I can think of is that she will have to be in the hospital again (and that was 3 YEARS AGO- that fear just never goes away).
Hoping for a healthy, happy first birthday for Quinn. She is just 16 days older than Abby. 1st birthdays are so fun!!

InactiveSarah,
That is scary! High fevers always scare me.
Bryce had an infection this past week with those high fevers too that Tylenol & Motrin wouldn’t control. Very scary.I’m so glad she seems to be feeling better & you were able to get her on an antibiotic. Good luck with everything. I hope she’s able to get well soon.

InactiveHope that she’s feeling better soon. I’m so paranoid about fevers!!! Sarah has seizures with anything over 102. Once she hit 105. It was so scary.
