InactiveI think I answered my original question? I did this late at night and math was never my strongest subject
, if any of you spot an error, please let me know. I’ll post more calculations in “Reidun’s Story and Gathered Information” in the TED Basics section if any of you are interested. How much fat should she get a day?
Daily needs for fat amount approximately a third of the infant’s total energy need. She should be getting 797-1050 kcal/day, a third of that is 266-350 kcal/day. There are 9 calories in one gram of fat. So 30-39g/day.
How much fat does she get from my breast milk a day?
4.5% of human milk is fat. The average fat content of human milk is 1.2 grams/oz. If she drinks 24 oz of milk, she should get 28.8 grams of fat.
How much additional fat should she be getting a day? 1.2-10.2 grams, I think there is 12g of fat in 1T, and 4g in 1t, so aim for 1/3-2 ½ t of extra fat a day.

InactiveYikes!!!

…I just finished the calculations for the protein, I am giving her too much meat!!! (…If she is getting the amount of milk she should, which I don’t think she is, but it is impossible to measure as she is getting most of it directly from me)Here are more of the calculations:
How many grams of protein should she be getting a day?
Reidun is 9 months, ~8kg, her weight should be between 7.97 and 9.05kg, so she should be getting somewhere between 8.13-9.23 grams of protein a day. (according to the second article 11.16-12.67)
How much milk should she get a day?
According to her pediatrician, she should be drinking 24 oz a day. This is 480 kcal/day.
How many grams of protein a day is she getting from breast milk?
1.1% of human milk is protein. There is 1.6g of protein in 100g of milk. I think 1oz of breast milk equals 28 grams. In 1oz of breast milk, there should be 0.36grams of protein. So, if she is drinking 24oz of milk, she should be getting 7.4-10.75g
How many grams of protein is in 1T of meat?
1oz of meat equals 7g of protein. I think 1T of meat = 1oz of meat, so 7g of protein is in 1T of meat
How many T of meat should she be getting a day?
If she is to get 8.13-9.23 grams of protein a day, and she gets 7.4-10.75g grams of protein from 24 oz of milk. She should get -2.6-0.7g of protein or <1T!!!!!!

InactiveHeidi,
If you go to http://www.kellymom.com They have growth charts for breastfed children and you can chart Reidun’s growth on it. Just go under the topic of “infant growth” on the left hand side. HTHApril 14, 2007 at 3:38 pm #30505Anonymous
InactiveI wouldn’t worry too, too much about the protien intake…I think every baby is different, and looking at your ticker, Reidun looks super cute and super healthy too me.

InactiveEmily: Thank you for the sweet message. I also think Reidun looks healthy (but she is currently thinner than the picture on her ticker). I, like all the other moms on this board, want my daughter to be the healthiest possible. I want to make informed choices, and catch things before they become a problem.

InactiveYOu are a wonderful mom, and I know you are just trying to help out Reidun. I was exactly like you when I first really started getting Brianna into solids. For me it was so much easier just BF because….well I guess maybe ignorance was bliss…I never really knew exactly how much she was getting, I just knew she was gaining so I didn’t worry about it. I only said that because one thing I have learned with Brianna is that I worried too much about what babies were “supposed” to have. I think really you just have to look at averages. So two more quick things…my ped and my lactation consultant said that after 6 months babies slowed down to an average of 1/2lb per month (so that would only be 8oz not 12-20) and also, my friends baby did the same thing as Reidun…got super skinny around a year, and is just now at 18 months starting to put a little weight on. You are a great mom and Reidun is lucky to have someone who cares enough to all this research for her.

InactiveEmily: Thank you for the kind words, you are very sweet
. Reidun put on less than 1/2 a pound in three months, I know every baby is different, I just want to make sure we catch things before they get too bad. Thank you for the additional information as well. April 18, 2007 at 12:46 am #30870Anonymous
InactiveMy daughter cannot have anything other than neocate and is also 9 months old. she drinks about 24 oz of formula a day, and also has fallen in percentiles (90% to 38%), but the dr is not concerned as she did grow some length and only grew a hair over a half a pound in 3 months….She is not concerned since Audrey is hitting her developmental milestones.
I understand the worry..I look back at my “notes” from what my son was eating and how he was 4lbs heavier at this age….but I have decided since she is a happy and pretty healthy baby (minus her food protein enterocolitis and reflux) that she is doing fine.
