InactiveHi all,
About a few weeks ago we starting putting an organic, whole grain rice
cereal (one tsp. per oz) in Sofie’s bottles to try and help her with the spitting
up, as well as give her some more calories (she’s a chowhound and is eating
around 32 oz. daily at 5 mos. She is having a little trouble with her poops,
and we were wondering what y’all would recommend….It seems as though
the general consensus is oatmeal? We are also in in the process of starting
to introduce solids (cereal first) once a day before the bottle. What did you
all experience with rice cereal, and is there a difference between whole grain
and the regular Gerber kind? We thought whole grain might not be so
binding due to the fiber???? Please share!

InactiveHi…as I have posted elsewhere…we didn’t have good luck with rice or oatmeal in the beginning…we got very loose smelly stools. So I actually commenced veges and fruit (both which would help loosen stools up) after a couple of days. We have only just introduced cereals back in and have had no probs. I don’t think there is any hard and fast rule re cereal…whilst they say to do it because they are iron fortified…as long as you get on to some of the green veges she should be right (sorry can’t recall what formula she is on…but it still contains iron anyway). Also it did take a good couple of weeks for Alana to get the idea of the spoon and swallowing…Goodluck.

InactiveWell, it stands to reason that whole grain rice would be less binding but when I give Myles whole grain rice, he still gets bound up by it. Some foods are just binding; organic and whole or not. Starches and low moisture content foods tend to be binding, rice, corn, bananas, etc.
Thickening in and of itself raises the ratio or low moisture food to high moisture food, and that can contribute to the problem because the bowels need an ample fluid suppy in order to function properly.
So, I would try oatmeal and see if she does better on that. And if it doesn’t improve I’d try to reduce the amount of cereal in each bottle.
Does she have any food sensitivites or intolerances that you know of? If not, you can probably start adding some pears or pear juice to her diet, and maybe even prunes (my babies were all on both by 5 months). But I’d try to the switch to oatmeal and maybe a little less per bottle first.
