Was this the first feeding you’ve dropped? It will probably take a few days for your body to adjust it’s milk production. I remember all too well the discomforts of being engorged. I didn’t think I’d ever be able to sleep on my stomach again! Red streaks are the signs of infection so keep an eye out for those. Otherwise, I’d say take some pain reliever and hopefully things will feel more “normal” in a few days.
January 6, 2007 at 9:48 pm #21814AnonymousInactiveI always did my weaning gradually so I didn’t really have that problem at all. If it gets too uncomfortable you might want to try pumping and then just gradually lessen the time you pump and increase the time between pumping. Eventually you’ll get to the point that you don’t need to pump at all. Shouldn’t take too long since you’ve only been nursing/pumping at night. (I know that’s a big pain, but it’s another option so you don’t have to be uncomfortable). Just an idea. Hope you’re feeling better soon.
January 7, 2007 at 1:23 pm #21850AnonymousInactiveYou know what is weird…we weaned super gradual (like a week or more in between feedings). I didn’t really have this same problem for the other feedings, i might have been a little bit engorged for a day or two, but then i was fine….after we dropped this last feeding I was fine for a few days, and then boom, the “rocks” (my little nick name) came…and I can’t get them to go away! I will try the motrin..so far I haven’t taken anything. No red streaks so that is good, but I will keep my eye out for that. On a funny side note, I don’t think my husband is in any hurry for this engorgement to go away! Thanks everyone!
January 7, 2007 at 2:55 pm #21866AnonymousInactiveHey, hope this isn’t too late to help, but try cold instead of heat. Heat only invigorates the blood which is actually what causes the engorgement. What you should do if you haven’t totally weaned her, is to apply a well wrapped ice pack to the breast for no more than 30 minutes after your last feed. This will help remind the body not to produce as much milk for the next feed. If this was the only feed left of the day, I would try the ice whenever you are uncomfortable.
You will freeze your you no what’s off, but I swear it works! I did this when my milk came in and after Ben dropped his middle of the night feeding. I would just tuck the packs inside my bra. It is freezing at first, but you get used to it. You could also try wetting a diaper or a nursing pad, freezing them and using that too. A diaper might be too big unless you have any of the teeny tiny newborn ones left over.
Hope it helps!

January 7, 2007 at 8:53 pm #21890AnonymousInactiveEmily – Had to laugh about DH liking the engorgement. I tell you what, I am the one who misses the larger boobs! I feel like I’ve been left with pancakes!!! I can now understand why many moms who breastfeed end up getting impants. Personally, I never would…but I can understand why!!!!!
January 8, 2007 at 3:26 pm #21947AnonymousInactiveAnd let me just add that I envy you being able to eat what you want finally!
I would love to breastfeed Ben for as long as I did my daughter, but at this rate, we’ll be lucky to make it a year!
What I wouldn’t give for some chocolate and coffee!
January 9, 2007 at 1:14 pm #22027AnonymousInactiveIt was hard to make it the year, and towards the end, after Brianna had been eating yogurt and cheese OK, I let up on myself a little and had a slice of pizza here and there, but it is worth it and I will do it again in a heartbeat for our next child if I need too! Here is what I did…I got myself a starbucks gift card with $70 on it (actually, my mom got it for me, when I told her I was going to go to Starbucks a ton after I was done BF Brianna) and told myself I could go to starbucks as often as I wanted too once I had weaned Brianna..well I go at least once a day now! b’s mom2007-1-10 13:57:48
January 10, 2007 at 2:00 pm #22082AnonymousInactiveAmy,
I had to add…being a girl that was formerly an A-…these D’s for the past two years have been kind of nice (well now they are closer to B’s…but still nice).
Urgh…my special friend came to visit yesterday…I haven’t seen her in almost two years too…now I am thinking (as I scarf as much junk into me as my bloated body will take) breastfeeding was great! Why did I stop (Just kidding, but hopefully some will get a chuckle out of that one!)
Happy Wednesday.
January 10, 2007 at 3:29 pm #22084AnonymousInactiveTo me the greatest thing about breastfeeding (besides the best food in the world for baby) was I could eat anything and not gain a pound, and I didn’t have to deal with menstruation. You do miss those benefits when your done.
January 10, 2007 at 5:21 pm #22091AnonymousInactiveI have to agree with Christine on that one. Not only can you eat anything you want and not gain a pound, but you lose all your pregnancy fat really fast too. At least I did. My MIL thought I was anorexic when I nursed my first son, but I ate as much as my husband! Breastfeeding definitely has benefits for both the baby & the mommy
Emily – How’s your engorgement doing now, by the way? Any better?

January 10, 2007 at 5:47 pm #22094AnonymousInactiveAF really hit me hard after I stopped breastfeeding. I didn’t realize HOW heavy and awful those first few periods would be!!!
I bf for 4 months and lost most of my baby weight but actually the last 10 pounds didn’t come off until AFTER I stopped. I read somewhere that your body holds on to some fat stores to help with milk production, which makes sense.
I had issues BF Sarah b/c of her reflux (didn’t know the correlation at the time) but I’ll defnitely try harder with baby #2.
Yes, Emily how is your engorgement?
January 10, 2007 at 10:34 pm #22104AnonymousInactiveAmy, you did amazing to last four months…I almost quit so many times (I assumed it was my fault Brianna was having her problems). If it wasn’t for my mom, I would have quit, but she just wouldn’t let me. But if there is something I have learned, breastfeeding doesn’t make you a good mom (although it does keep you away from PMS!!!haha!), loving your child is what makes you a good mom! And you do that ten times over!!!
I must say…looking back on it breast feeding was pretty darn good. I know it was the best for Brianna…but the perks for me weren’t to darn bad either! However..my old size A’s now fit again…i think I was just hit with a double whammy…engorgement from stopping BF and AF making her 2 year debut!!! That is what made my pain so bad. (thanks for asking how I was doing though) How is Sarah? She is just such a cutie pie in her picture…I can’t even figure out how to get my picture of Brianna to upload. Lillypie keeps telling me it is too big, but I don’t know how to shrink it
January 11, 2007 at 10:27 am #22123AnonymousInactiveEmily,
I had this problem once when trying to load pics for ebay. DH said I had to re-take the pictures at a lower resolution. If you have a digital camera you can usually set the resolution for low/medium/high resolution. It’s great to have someone in the house that can read and understand the manual, and that wouldn’t be me! DH lays in bed at night reading manuals. Last night it was the manual for our new water softner.
January 11, 2007 at 11:49 am #22125AnonymousInactiveEmily – Sarah is doing FANTASTIC! I almost can’t believe how happy of a baby I have. These past few months have been amazing with her and it’s soooo cool to watch her grow and learn. She does the “How big is Sarah?” thing now where she throws her arms up. Mind blowing to realize that she can understand what I’m saying and respond. Love it though! Thanks for asking! Hope your PMS is tolerable and you can enjoy a few weeks before it STRIKES AGAIN! Oh also, I’ve tried putting a few pictures in Lilypie that say they’re too big. I don’t change the setting on my camera so I’m still clueless why some pictures are too big and some aren’t??
Christine – I am happy to hear that there are MEN in the world who even READ instructions/directions! My DH always wants to see if he can do it himself first…then after 3 hours of messing it up, he’ll dig out the directions. MEN!
