InactiveHi. My 4 and 1/2 month old is primarily breast fed but due to sleeping issues (for another post) we’ve been giving him one bottle of formula a day. Due to a milk protein allergy we’ve been using Alimentum (and the rec. of the ped. gastroenterologist). The last 3 nights we used powder as opposed to RTF and it’s been worse than ever. In fact, he’d basically stopped throwing up (maybe we were at once every other day) and for the last 3 days he’s thrown up 5x per day if not more. Anyone have any experience with different reactions to different formulations of Alimentum?

Inactiveyes there are different reactions to those and it can be normal.
im just curious how did they determine its an allergy versus an intolerance?
my son is milk/soy protein intolerant and cant even handle alimentum because of the milk proteins.February 1, 2007 at 6:04 pm #23779Anonymous
Inactivealso i noticed your child is on zantac-that never helped my son and he never slept well until he was on a PPI. have you tried a PPI for your baby? they are much more effective than H2 blockers.

InactivePerhaps I misspoke. I’m not really sure what they’ve diagnosed. They just said to stop eating any dairy or beef, which I’ve done, and there was a vast improvement, for about a month. This was at approx. 2 months. We didn’t do anything after that as month 3 was livable. Month 4, though, has been horrific, so we’re going back to the specialist next Wed. I’ll ask your question and let you know.
I was wondering why he was able to eat Alimentum, with the 17$ caesin (don’t know correct spelling – you know, the milk derivative) as I’m avoiding all dairy, including caesin!

InactiveTo answer your alimentum question…from what I understand, the milk proteins are already broken down in Alimentum so they are easier to digest. Whereas, any milk proteins you eat that he gets through your breastmilk are not broken down, therefore not easy to digest making him more likely to react. Does that make sense?

InactiveAlso I think someone here said the powder contains more corn syrup or corn syrup solids and some babies react to that.

InactiveYup. I understand.
We did try prevacid first, at the rec. of the pediatrician. It didn’t work, but that’s b4 the specialist suggested stopping dairy/beef. I wonder if we should try it again?!

InactiveAlso, Zantac worked SO well for my older son. He still spit up, of course, but no wiggling, no crying and he actually slept. I thought he was a bad sleeper until I met my younger son!
Thanks everyone.

InactiveThe prevacid was the “delayed-release oral suspension.” He was prescribed one packet (15 mg) dissolved in 30ML of water daily. It was SUCH A PAIN TO DOSE!!!! I was glad to switch to Zantac. What do you think about the amount of Prevacid he was taking? He was very young — and probably about 14-15 lbs at the time.
We’ve upped the Zantac to 1 ml in the a.m. and 1.5 in the p.m. I’m not sure that is enough as he weighs 20 lbs!
Thanks.
