InactiveSo we got the RTF alimentum from Wic and started them back on it today. And we are trying it with no cereal. We are going to do a couple days with that and work our way up witht he cereal if needed. Has anyone stopped thickening the bottles when switched formula. Dakota suprisingly sucked down like 7 ounces at one feeding today. He hasn’t eaten that much at all. And so far he tolerated it well. When he burped he spit up just a little tiny bit but so far so good. Logan on the other hand, well is still fighting me with the eating. He gags, and chokes, and turns his head and trys to wrestle out of my arms. But I can feed him NO problem when he is sleeping. No gagging, nothing. He screams cause he is hungry but just refuses to eat, except when he is sleeping. Any suggestions on how to get him to eat? He was like this even with thickened bottles too. He has actually been like this for the past two weeks since the reflux hit it’s highest point so far. I know the prevacid probably wouldn’t have kicked in by now. They have only been on it for a week today. Help please!

InactiveYou’re probably right, the Prevacid hasn’t kicked in yet. Dakota may have more tolerance for discomfort, or doesn’t have as bad a case of reflux as Logan, and so he ate better.
Many moms on this site report that their infants only eat while sleeping. My son was like that too until he was properly medicated. It’s probably because when they are sleepy they are less aware of their discomfort. Just be careful, because sleep feeding can lead to BIG, BIG problems down the road. If the baby continues to eat only when asleep he may develop a terrible and long lasting feeding aversion, and when he gets bigger and no longer stays asleep during feedings, you can have a terrible problem on your hands.

So, if Logan doesn’t improve in a week I’d check with the doctor about his dosage of Prevacid. Is it enough? Is he getting it three times per day? Also, there are other PPI’s that you could try if the Prevacid doesn’t begin to help him. Here’s the website to check PPI dosing http://www.marci-kids.com/
My son was definitely on the road to developing a feeding aversion, and although he is much more comfortable now, he’s still not crazy about the bottle. He no longer sleep feeds, but I do swaddle him when I feed him. He is able to relax and eat better that way. You might try that with Logan.
Have you tried Mylanta Cherry Supreme before feedings? Some moms here say it helps. If you post a question about it someone may be able to tell you the dosage.
Hopefully, things will improve after another week on the Prevacid. I hope so!!

InactiveHow much cereal are you using to thicken his bottles with? It almost sounds like he could benefit from more thickening and not less. You can use up to 1 tablespoon per ounce.

InactiveIt was at 1 tbsp per ounce sometimes even more. They were still chocking and gagging on it then and the doc said that it might be too thick but the thinner the nutramagin (powder) they spit up almost all of it after every bottle. The alimentum, we are going to day two with no cereal and they have only spit up a few times. More with burps than anything so we are going to start going up with cereal by 1/2 tsp per ounce to see where the are good at.

InactiveOk, good at least you’ve already tried more. You might just need to trial and error to find the right amount. Thickening formula was key for us. We ended up doing 1 tablespoon per 2 ounces and that was perfect for my dd. We thickened her formula until she was 9 months old.
