InactiveWasn’t quite sure where to post this, but here goes! Tonight I put a little rice cereal in my baby’s bottle,in the hopes that thickening it might help. ( Getting desperate at this point
)Well, BAD idea! He drank a bit, seemed to really like it, but then he quit drinking and started screaming, and turned BRIGHT RED!!
I am assuming it is an allergy..? I gave him a tiny bit of allergy drops, and after an hour or so the redness went away. I hadn’t noticed when I bought it,but it was rice cereal w/ apples. Could he possibly be allergic to apples? I’ve never heard of a rice allergy…?? October 3, 2007 at 6:44 am #43681Anonymous
InactiveWe can’t tolerate rice cereal and we are 7.5months old so it may not be an allergy truely but possibly an intolerance. I would just stop the cereal and wait if I were you.

InactiveIt could be an intolerance to one or both. It probably has “apple flakes” in it and absorbic acid. I know that is a major reflux flare for Landen too. I hope he is ok today! Thickening only made things worse for Landen. I’m not sure what formula you are on, but Landen wound up only doing better on Neocate. The milk proteins in every thing else just kept his reflux raging.
I hope your new GI doc gives you lots of insight on Gavin’s pain and gets him straightened out. Every time I read your posts it breaks my heart.October 3, 2007 at 9:19 am #43686Anonymous
InactiveHe is on Isomil advance, which of course is soy formula. They think he may have MPI, as he had real bad eczema ,and thought it was from the dairy in my diet ( I also breastfeed). My supply has dropped drastically sice he was in the hospital a few weeks ago for viral menningitis,as I was sick too. Funny, lately when I nurse,he seems to do better, and I have been having a little milk daily, and it doesn’t seem to affect him. I am pumping trying to build my supply back up, as he has little patience to nurse as he’s used to the darn bottle which is so much faster!
I haven’t seen Neocate at the store–?October 3, 2007 at 10:19 am #43690Anonymous
InactiveI didn’t realize you were nursing. If your supply comes back up, that is probably best for him, esp if he’s improving when you nurse. If you think he’s MSPI, you could try the Total Elimination Diet. Laura has a lot of info on that in the Intro Link.
If you end up doing a hypoallergenic formula there is Alimentum and Nutramigen, but they have milk proteins in them, which for some MSPI babies it is still hard on them. Neocate isn’t available in stores – or at least that I’ve seen. We order our’s from Neocate.com. I’d def talk to the New GI before making any switched first though!October 3, 2007 at 10:25 am #43691Anonymous
InactiveThat’s what I was thinking,on waiting until we see the GI before switching formula. I would much rather get him back on nursing full time,as it is obviously the best of all options. We didn’t start nursing until he was 5 weeks old,but once we got my supply going it was going pretty well until the virus & he was hospitalized. I have read about the TED, and it seems doable. Planning on spending the weekend in bed and having a
“nurse-a-thon” to try & get my supply back up. I just started my period, only the 2nd since the baby, & my supply seems even lower,as I am bleeding really heavily. Hopefully we’ll get back on track soon. -
