InactiveSorry I got to this post late Tracy .. .wish I had been able to save you some aggrevation from a been there done that point of view. Laura e-mailed to see if maybe I had anything to add but my systems been down- errr. Anyway – my dd (Sophia) had reflux and MSPI and was on 30 mgs of Prevacid like your lo. Anyway, she never had any of the typical signs of MSPI except for EXTREME irritability and gassiness, discomfort, some irregularity, and EXTREME night wakings. She has some dry scaling patches even now but nothing to speak of and was prone to ear infections. Other than the reflux and the really “colicky” type behavior I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her – figured I just had a difficult child. I kept chaulking it up to the reflux and the doctors just acting like they didn’t know what the heck to do. Upon discovering the MSPI myself around 11/12 months I STILL listened to the doctor and switched my daughter to soy milk after her one year check. What you described in Ian is exactly what happened with us at that point. . .any time you see a measurable difference in your childs behavior you can almost bet that it is dietary and I don’t think its ever normal to have any type of increased irritability over a period of time. Of course there will be an adjustment phase of change in bms or gassiness but beyond that there shouldn’t be increased discomfort or that weird feeling that your kids just not like your kid if you know what I mean.
After our hellish intro into soy milk, Sophia was put right back on formula despite my doctor acting baffled about her extreme irritability and loss of appetite. .. Sophia was fine after two weeks on formula again and my doctor FINALLY came around. BTW – we finally got a 11 month break from incesant ear infections too. We took her off of formula after 19 months and switched to whole milk by then. Moral of the story I guess is follow your mothers instinct and don’t trust that the doctors have a clue when it comes to dietary issues. I have a lot more to add ont he topic but don’t want to beat a dead horse. If you want to chat let me know though and I’ll get my e-mail to you. . .we had a hellish first year and hate to see others having to trudge through it all!

ps – MSPI reactions can be immediate or slowly build up over time . . .it takes atleast three weeks to get offending proteins out of the system so I wouldn’t do a formula switch until you see some evening out.. . .or unless the Elicare is totally not agreeing with him and it isn’t going to hurt to switch. Allim. has trace amounts of lactose in it so that may have been the issue.

InactiveHi – just wondering if your lo was doing any better and if things had settled down after you switched back to the Elicare?
