anemic?

I ended up taking Seth to the dr. since he was still not feeling 100%. The good news is he just has a virus and his lungs and chest sounded clear. His blood work, however, did reveal he is slightly anemic. He was just below the minimum numbers they like to see so she said it could be due to his illness and we can try to up the iron in his diet and then test again in March.

Has anyone else experienced this? Also, could anemia mean something was going on in his GI tract that I should be concerned about? I did not think to ask her at the time.

We found out Bryce was severely anemic when he was about 19 months or so. We had absolutely no clue until our GI doctor noticed that he was pale and had his blood tested. His problem was that he had been on breastmilk only for those 19 months, and since he wasn’t eating any solids at all he wasn’t getting enough iron despite his mulitvitamin with iron. We started him on iron drops along with the vitamin and also started him on formula with iron. That combination totally turned him around and his anemia was gone.

Since Seth’s numbers were just barely under normal, I think if I were you I would just try to add more iron into his diet like she said, or maybe add a multivitamin with iron and then see where he is at his appointment in March. Good luck! I hope it’s nothing to worry about and his levels go back up.

Thanks, Heather. I did call his dr. back and asked more about it and she basically said exactly what you did. We are going to add 1/2 of a Flinestone’s Complete tablet to his regimen and then look at it again in March. She said if I was really worried I could call the GI and ask them to test his stools but she thought if he had anything going on that his numbers would be way off.
