Any info?

My baby was diagnosed with reflux at a month old. He tried Zantac which did not help and then was put on Prevacid. They told me it would not stop the vomitting but would ease the discomfort. We were blessed that it did both. He still spit up, but not nearly the quantity he was before. We have never increased his dose (1/2 a 15mg. tablet a day). He is now 8 months old. We have attempted to take him off twice to see what would happen. It is so hard to tell if it’s the lack of Prevacid causing discomfort or teething. When we put him back on the Prevacid he seems happier but spits up more. Does that make sense to anyone? Why would he spit up more on the medicine? He almost doesn’t spit up at all when he’s off the medicine, but seems unhappy. I am so discouraged. The pediatrician can’t give much advice beyond what we’ve done. Any suggestions?

Hi Sleeplessmom, I have read a few people suggest that bubs spit up more on meds because it doesn’t hurt as much and they don’t try to reswallow it before it makes it all the way up. I had a silent refluxer so I didn’t really notice a change in spitting with meds. I think if your bub is happier on the meds, I would probably continue for a little while longer. Few bubs seem to outgrow before 9 months and some take longer. I know it is a pain sometimes but I always was much happier when Alana was happier. Goodluck whatever you decide.

I agree with what Therese said, sometimes they spit more on meds as they aren’t in pain anymore and therefore it just comes right up.

I’d personally do whatever keeps him the most comfortable. My daughter is a silent refluxer, and the reswallowing can actually be more damaging then the outright spitting.

Thank you all for the info. What you said makes a lot of sense. We are going to try to increase his dose to 3/4 tablet and see how it goes. The pediatrician allowed it two months ago, but he didn’t seem to need it at the time.
