So it seems that Marisa is really getting close with teeth – or so we
think. Have felt a few bumps for some time now but the past few days
she’s barely been sleeping (but seems exhausted), constantly jamming
hands or toys in mouth, trying to eat my chin and/or shoulder, getting
hyper/wakeful, whiney, etc. Doesn’t seem reflux related – no crying
when spitting, no arching when eating, Mylanta doesn’t make a
difference. She won’t even let me look in her mouth yesterday/today.
Tylenol doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything. Scared to try Motrin
since I know it can be tough on their tummies and since we are
currently trying Alimentum and don’t want too many changes at once.
BTW, this started before the Alimentum switch – so doesn’t seem at all
related.Unfortunately the Hylands don’t seem to agree with her. Not sure if
it’s the lactose or the chamomile (I have a chamomile/ragweed issue
myself) or maybe the belladonna. They seem to make her spit/vomit more
and generally uncomfortable. She didn’t like the frozen raw carrot. She likes teething toys for a few minutes but then gets frustrated.
Any ideas on any other meds (homeopathic or regular) for relief or better teething toys?

Some parents have reported adverse reaction to Benadryl i.e. making their children wired as opposed to tired, so I would give it at a nap time for the first time rather than bedtime. That way if it makes Marisa wired, then you may miss a nap, but not a full night’s sleep. It made Dylan tired, so we gave it a bedtime and he slept better and got rid of the pain.

rather try just rubbing on the gums rather than giving a dose. Trying
not to give anything else new orally if possible since want to know how
she’s reacting to the Alimentum…I’ve never seen liquid Benadryl come to think of it. Just normal adult stuff?
She’s 23 weeks and about 17 pounds.

I think they may even make a dye free but I am not sure if you need a prescription or if you can get it from the pharmacist, but I would ask. We gave the stuff with the dye in it, you can buy it right over the counter, but if you are limiting what you give, you may want to look into the dye free.

Will pick some up and try this afternoon – just going to rub on gums.
Also going to make a Buy Buy Baby run and see if they have any teethers
that look better.January 27, 2006 at 10:55 am #177AnonymousInactiveThey make a pacifier that is good for teething. Isaac really doesn’t take a pacifier but loves to teeth on this one:

It is the ortho one on the top of the page. It is really thin and flexible.
Also Isaac loves to chew on his gerber soft spout sippy cup!

bubble gum flavor. Rubbed a little on her gums – can’t tell if did
anything. She’s totally not napping at all – just like 20 minutes here or there.
Not sleeping well at night either. I guess wakefulness goes along with
teething? She also doesn’t want me looking in her mouth…January 27, 2006 at 3:29 pm #195AnonymousInactiveHi Karen. Neither one of my kids ever liked me looking/feeling in their mouths for some reason when they were babies. I never did find anything other than advil that worked for teething. With Hailey I’ve just been using Hylands. As far as teether toys, both my kids have LOVED the chewable links that you attach together. I can’t remember exactly who makes them- I know that Sassy makes some and also fisher price makes linkadoos- anyhow the ones we have have all sorts of raised patterns/bumps on them. I just attach a bunch together (you can even throw them in the fridge for a bit to make them cold, though I don’t think that’s the intent), and the kids love to chew on them and their easy to grab and hold in their little hands. s&h’s mum2006-1-27 15:29:46

teething. In fact, just gave Zach a dose before his nap. We
were lucky because it didn’t seem to bother their tummies. Zach
also likes to chew on a frozen washcloth and that seems to sooth him a
bit. Good luck. -
