Ian’s had what looks like now 2 viruses back to back. Bad cold first time, then a nasty throat blistering virus (I have it too-and ped saw them in his throat). It’s been a total of 3 weeks for both. The first one didn’t bother him so much, this one has had extreme fussiness, crying, occasional sleep disturbance, etc. And for the last week, he’s also been pulling himself up in the middle of the night in his sleep (no kidding) and getting upset. But overall-one wake each night for that. The doctor said give virus a couple of days and he should be fine as I’m getting over mine and he’s had it forever. However, last night was the worst. Went to bed at 8pm. Had ok day-looked like he was getting back to himself, then WHAM, 11pm wake and BIG screaming, unconsolable fit. I tried to calm him but nothing worked so I laid him beside me in bed which did, then back to crib. Asleep. Then WHAM 3am-I hear whimpering. He’s standing in his crib. So I go over and lay him down quietly which usually works as he does this half asleep. Then he get’s back up so I leave him then WHAM huge crying spell. Nothing works-let him cry for awhile, ng. Put him with us, ng. Falls asleep for 20 min and starts screaming again. So we think he’s hungry and get up to feed him and screaming again. Nothing is working. Ped said 2 days ago ears are fine now. Should I bring him back in or is this just working it’s way through? I don’t think it’s allergy related because he’s eating the same foods and I don’t think it’d last this long. I did move his 2nd dose of prevacid to 4pm because I couldn’t fit all the feedings in. He used to get it before bed. This isn’t like him to nightwake so I’m not complaining about that, I just can’t figure out why the virus seems to get better then worse. Or is it something else? Teething wouldn’t be this huge would it?
Apologies for long post-I’m really tired.
June 21, 2006 at 9:06 am #10193AnonymousInactiveSounds extreme to me for teething but I do know others have had huge
teething reactions. How long ago did you change timing of his Prevacid
dose? Maybe he needs that or at least a dose of Zantac or Pepcid before
bed to help breakthrough acid at night? I would definitely check his
ears again too though to be safe. Hope he feels better soon and you can
get some rest.June 21, 2006 at 9:42 am #10195AnonymousInactiveI would try the Zantac/Pepcid/or Cherry Supreme Mylanta Before bedtime. Also, whenever my son was over-tired he would wake up more in the night (and go to sleep later). Whenever he’d wake up in the night, he’d scream more if I went into console him. I had to let him CIO and then it usually took up to two weeks before his sleep pattern was normal again. It would only take him missing one nap, or even going down a little late for a nap to throw him into that downward spiral.
June 21, 2006 at 11:40 am #10208AnonymousInactiveI would also take him back to the doc just to be sure. Hope you get some sleep soon.
June 21, 2006 at 11:56 am #10210AnonymousInactiveIt’s funny you say that Marsha. I was just wondering if his naps were causing this. He had 2-2hour naps yesterday because of his virus. He was exhausted and I let him go because I thought it would help. Usually he sleeps 1-1hour nap and 1-2 hour nap. He went to bed at his usual time (anywhere between 7:30-8 depending on how long he drags out his bottle). I too think trying to console him is tricky but he’s been sick so it’s not normal for him. I’m going to change prevacid back tonight and see if it helps. Perhaps too much food later in the day for him. Thanks for the ideas.
Karen-thank you too as always. I’m not seeing any refluxing but we all know I’ve missed that before! I changed the prevacid timing about 1 week ago and it’s made our lives so much better in terms of feeds but oh well. No sense in risking it. The ped is going to check him again today and maybe blood test on white cells. Funny, Ian hasn’t even had one spit up since five months old and his hospital visit. Could be silent though…
June 21, 2006 at 1:48 pm #10218AnonymousInactiveIt could be teething! Isaac is the most grouchy and unconsolable teether ever. It is horrible!
I hope he feels better soon!
June 21, 2006 at 4:37 pm #10235AnonymousInactiveHow’s he doing today, Tracy?
June 21, 2006 at 5:19 pm #10239AnonymousInactiveThe little trickster got me! He woke up after 9am from nap screaming/crying with over 100 temp- fever is at 7 days! but then perked up out of nowhere. Our babysitter played with him-he giggled, bounced, moved, rolled, fine. Only thing was everytime I walked by he was crying for me (but truthfully I kind of am in love with that). So he seemed himself just a little needier. I cancelled ped because I thought-road to recovery. Then, it all turned again around 3-v. irritable, not eating, fever up. So I don’t know what to think. I’m wondering if strep? They said coxsackie maybe (but he’s young and would it last this long?). I’m feeling better today but we’ll see how tonight goes. He’s been like this for awhile now and just want him to feel better.
June 21, 2006 at 6:38 pm #10242AnonymousInactiveHe’s not too young for coxsackie – my niece had it at 9 months and it
was a doozy – but it did break her of the pacifier and bottle early!
I’d definitely bring him in to get checked out – can’t hurt. Hope you
both feel better and get some rest. -
