Well… I am sad to say that we didnt even make it past the first day(yesterday ) with the switch, he was almost flat out refusing to eat all day long, and when he did eat, he acted like it hurt as he was eating…If he’s MSPI would it be that soon for him to show signs of intolerance?? I gave him his aimentum late last night and the first bottle of the day today, and he sucked it down with no complaints… Oh well… Guess we’ll just stick with what works… But I would like to try to cut back on the cereal intake that he’s getting.. I think it would help with gas.
Any suggestions on Why he pulls off the nipple( slow flow avent stage 1) like he does when he has to burp every few sips?? Maybe he really is getting choked on it because it too thin for him now.. Or maybe its just a silent protest??

Inactivei honestly think it is because he is not used to the taste!!! it took us time to switch over.. we had to do one once at a time. i would try again but slowly introduce it.

InactiveMyles hated the taste of Good Start initially. I had to add it slowly to his soy formula or breast milk until he got used to it.
Is he pulling off the Avent nipple with the Good Start only, or with both?
It took Myles a while to adapt to thinner feeds as well. I had to reduce the oatmeal very gradually or he’d fight or refuse the bottle.

Inactivewell, yes and no( about pulling off the Avent nipple) He will drink a few sips, then pull off, go back on himself, pull off, repeat, repeat, until he gets so mad, he just flat out refuses…
I did start to reduce the amount of oatmeal he is getting from 4 scoops to 3 and he didnt notice( we use the purple alimentum scoop to measure it out for each bottle) so we’ll probably try it this way for awhile till I can get him on just milk again.
Its really not that big of deal about the cost, thankfully we get WIC and they give him 8 cans of formula a month, but most times I end up buying a can or two b/c he almost refuses any baby food, and thats really $55.00/ month we just dont have extra, so thats really where my concern was, but maybe as he gets older, he’ll accept more baby food, he’s only 5 months, so most of his meals will be bottles, but if I can get him to replace 2 bottles a day, The WIC formula would pretty much cover him thru the month….

InactiveAre you sure the nipple isn’t too slow for him?
None of my three babies would take an Avent nipple which was disappointing since I had invested way too much money in buying so many of what I thought was the best bottle and nipple out there. Some babies just don’t latch on to the wider nipple as well as other babies. Do you think that could be the problem? With these wide nipples they have to really open their mouths wide (like a nursing infant) and get a large portion of that wide section of the nipple into their mouths in order to suck on it properly. My babies just wouldn’t do it, so I gave up and gave up and they all did better with a narrow nipple.
Just something to consider…

Inactivei know that shane drank the bottle the same exact way when we tried to switch him all at once.. soo i still think that could of been the problem.

InactiveWell, when we first went from breast to bottle* dont even get me started on how STUPID I feel for taking him off the breast at this point!* I tried the Avent, he did great with them. Then, he started to show signs of reflux, and it seemed as though the Avent aggrivated it for some reason.. so we tried the Dr. Browns standard size( didnt know they made a wide neck and no even sells the wides in my area) and he was on that for months, then when we started the cereal addition, I had to swap him to Vent aire standard, b/c I couldnt get the cereal to flow thru the Dr. Browns…
So good point. His little latch may prefer the smaller nipples. He did have a short frenulum that we had to have clipped, his little tounge was clefted it was so short, one of the reasons I stopped it nursing.. slow weight gain, sore nips, etc, etc, b/c he was tiring out from having to work so hard to eat..

InactiveIf only we could all go home from the hospital with a lactatation expert! I had my heart set on nursing all three of mine and it didn’t work with any of them.
So, I sure know how you feel. Just remember that babies who are breast fed are not loved more than those who are bottle fed. You’re doing the best you can and your baby is loved and that’s what matters the most.
