Are there any cold meds that are ok?

Ben has a nasty cold with a hacking cough, that just rips my heart out to hear. He has congestion, runny nose, the works.

He’s 2, so he’s beyond the “no,no” age for cold meds, but I’m pretty sure they are now saying that they shouldn’t be given to kids under 6. So is there anything I can do for him? I’m doing the saline, vapor rub, humidifier, but his cough has me worried a little.

Any ideas?

our peds always said we could use Delsym. Also, just to dry them up, we are fairly comfortable with Benadryl. It will dry that awful drip so that Ben can breathe better and then get a bit of sleep to feel better. If the cough is dry and like the seal (croupy) then I might call the doc….

Kendra was miserable as well (coghing fits that made her throw up and kept her up all night and all of us in the house). She prescribed BROMHIST-DM Drops. Kendra is also 2. This particular cold medicine is sugar free, alchohol free and dye free. It si also has all in one (descongestant, antihistamine and cough supresant)

We give i dropful every 6 hours or as needed. It is helping tons with the cough. We also use Benadryl when no having bad cough.

I hoep he feels better soon.

We were able to use Mucinex (per ped) for Brodie when he had a cold w/ quite a bit of congestion (nasal & chest) + a cough. It really seemed to help. I think they have a liquid but we used the powder packets & he LOVED them – they were like Fun Dip-lol.

Anyway, we also used the saline drops, warm mist humidifier & Vicks on his chest before bed.

We (like Leo) use Benedryl sometimes as well.

HTH & hope Ben’s feeling better soon. We are already on our 2nd round of colds w/ both boys 🙁

I was going to suggest the Delsym and the Benadryl as well. Benadryl won’t help with this cough but it will with the post nasal drip. Hope he feels better.

Both my girls have been fighting colds and nasal drainage. YUCK!! I had to take Ashlynn to the Dr this am because she had drainage coming out of her lt ear. So she is on a antibotic for a sinus infection and ear infection. I have been giving the girls benadryl to help them sleep a little better. Hope been gets to feeling better

I would suggest Delsym and Benadryl as well. Recently Sarah was majorly sick but it was viral so we weren’t given an antibiotic. I pleaded with the doctor to prescribe SOMETHING to help her sleep and NOT cough all night. He said benadryl IS actually a cough suppresent + the alcohol would knock her out. We would NOT have survived those next few nights without it!

He even let me “peek” at his book of dosages for OTC meds. Now that the FDA has cracked down on all OTC meds under 2 or 6 or whatever he can’t use his trusty little book “legally” anymore…but he let me jot some dosages down.

Thanks everyone. I ended up calling the oncall nurse, and she said the same things you are. Though she did not suggest the Delsym. But she said that if the cough continues to bring him in and they prescribe a cough syrup.

BUT, she did say to try giving him a tsp. of Karo syrup if he is having a coughing spell. It goes down easy, coats the throat and helps soothe that constant tickle. We tried it last night, and it WORKED! crazy. She said we could use it as often as necessary…

There is an Rx cough supressant for children (toddlers) called Levall-12. I always ask for it for my boys when they have a horrid cough. It works FANTASTIC for them. You might ask about it if the Karo doesn’t cut it anymore.
