i thought i’d tell you what else we learned from the ped ENT when sylvia needed her tonsils and adenoids removed. after her fundo, even though she was no longer spitting so much up, she continued to be failure to thrive. she also started to chew her food and spit it out instead of swallowing it. sometimes she just refused her food. i think that is when i first realized her tonsils were so big—but she also had thrush which was probably more of the reason she wouldn’t eat.
we cleared the thrush up and she started eating and sleeping, but it didn’t last long and she stopped growing. (she got sick) the ped ENT told us that obstructive sleep apnea can cause children to be failure to thrive because they produce the most growth hormone when they are in the deepest stages of sleep. if they are constantly being roused slightly during their sleep because they are struggling to breath, they don’t get to the deep stages of sleep—–and so they don’t produce as much growth hormone.
i thought i’d tell you that my twins got tubes in their ears at 11 months old and molly got tubes at about 8 months old. all 3 of them did well.
