Attn: Elecare users

Emma’s GI is wanting me to try Elecare for 1 year and older, vanilla flavor, to see if it helps any. I’m curious, is there anyone using this??

For those of you that have tried the regular elecare, under one year of age, how often do your little ones have BM’s? I hear with the Neocate and Elecare since they don’t have a lot in it that they can limit how often they go to the bathroom.

Also, isn’t there still corn in Elecare??

Hi Brandy,

My son Ian has been on elecare for 9 months now-it’s been a lifesaver for us (after a month adjustment period). Ian never had normal bm’s-we breastfed for one month, then hutramagin prior to switching to elecare and it was always one poop every 3 sometimes four days. They said it was normal for him but who knows as his overall digestive tract was so weak. I can tell you Elecare is less constipating then Neocate because it isn’t made to volume when they are under a year so there was extra water whereas Neocate was. And yes, there is cornstarch in it. Good luck! Oh, and I’ve also tried the vanilla which clearly is the better tasting version.

Thanks Tracy! I was hoping you would respond. I am hoping this helps her. I hate switching her at 19 months but whatever works. My husbands insurance covered Alimentum until she was 18 months and I hoping they will cover this, we are going through the paperwork now. I just don’t know what else to do since she can’t handle milk or soy and she is getting enough nutrients since she barely eats. Does your insurance cover it? Where do you get it from??

Our insurance does cover it but we had to have our doc write a really tough letter-if I can find it-would you like a copy?? I get it through a children’s pharmacy in manhattan but we originally just went to cvs, explained the situation, and they found out where to order and took care of it. I think that’s the only way insurance will cover it unfortunately.

I’m sorry- I know that stinks to switch. Do they want her to switch so you can raise the calories or is it because she doesn’t tolerate alimentum as well as they think she should? Is she still on bottles? Just be warned it smells awful so bottles cut out the smell for them-but if you can get the vanilla, all should be fine. It’s tough. I think we have to stay on it too because although Ian can tolerate soy milk-he doesn’t like it straight. Plus it doesn’t have the calcium that milk has. Not to worry though, one day our little ones will be eating a big cheese pizza with a milkshake I’m sure! I remember when Ian used to vomit up soy and now he tolerates it fine. Milk to come…Good luck!!

Ya, if you could find a copy that would be great!!!!!! My GI had to right a pretty lengthy letter also to get the Alimentum covered; it took about a month for them to decide so I know how challenging it is. My GI is willing to right just about anything for me so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Emma had an endoscopy that showed damage to her small bowel so they thought celiac disease. Then they took a bunch of blood and stool samples and everything showed normal so they don’t know how she is getting damage so yes they don’t think she is handling the Alimentum as well as we thought. She is a very happy baby so she showed no symptoms beside the GI problems, she still has gas and bloating pretty bad to. She is still on a bottle, she gets 2 a day, nap and bedtime. That is the only time she gets formula since she won’t drink it from a cup.

That’s exactly what I keep telling myself, one day she will be over all this. We gave her pizza when we were trialing cheese but since she failed she can’t have it anymore, boy does she love it. We don’t eat it around her now, I feel so bad!! Let me know if you can find that letter. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!

we are on neocate. but i just wanted to let you know that my son poops every day. and i was also concerned about the corn syrup, but the manufactoror told someone who informed me that the allergenic part is out and its just the syrup, which is not allergenic. (i dont know the exact scientific explanation lol)

My 13 month old drinks it. The vanilla flavored actually tastes okay. Our insurance does cover it (the hospital we go through were the ones to get it covered, so I don’t know what is involved), but we have to order it directly from Ross. None of the pharmacies around here can get it.
