There are loveys similar to the ones mentioned here at Under the Nile (and they are organic). We bought the 6 inch one for my son who is 6 months old and it’s too small. He can’t find it at night yet. We’re bought a few more and are experimenting, but I’m worried he’ll imprint on one we don’t like! Also, he already sleeps with it, when he finds it, on his face (he puts one of the knots — hat, arms and legs are knotted — in his mouth and spreads it over his face). I worry a little, but it’s small, and we do have a video monitor, and he is already sitting up, starting to crawl at 6 months so it should be ok. Interestingly, my husband sleeps with a pillow on his face, too.
My older son has a lovey that we gave him at 4.5 months. We now have 6 of them and I was so terrified that he’d realize there is more than one. The look on his face the day he saw one in his crib and one in the laundry!!! However, now he just calls him his clean and dirty Gingers (it’s an orange giraffe). He chews on it, so it gets really stinky. And, it’s not allowed out of his room (that took a lot of work).
My recommendation is, in addition to thinking about size, and being able to buy multiples, make sure it is machine washable. A lot of the Ty and Gund animals now are. Some just say “spot clean.” Yeah right — spot cleaning is not going to cut it with reflux babies! And, make sure you like the thing you pick as it could be with you for years!
Good luck.
