InactiveI had PRAYED that my son would outgrow this mess before he started getting mobile, but alas, I am not one of the lucky ones….6 months came and went he still spits to beat the band. Only now it’s nastier baby food, colored spit up. He’s now 7 and a half months and we are worried about our carpets.
We had kept him on tarps we bought from Linens N Things and that worked while he was immobile, but not much longer. We have had to go buy a ton of shower curtains that we will try to cover the carpet with. We also need to worry soon about our couches as I know he will start to pull up on stuff and they are nice.
I am so upset that this is still an issue. My What to Expect Book says it usually subsides after baby sits up more and eats more solids but no such luck for us. He spits even more now that he moves around more. I don’t know for sure, but I am pretty sure his is tied to an underdeveloped LES. Please tell me WHEN this stuff goes away and WHEN this little muscle will grow the heck up?
We are to the point where we are going to ask about Reglan in April at his next pedi appt if there is no improvement. We have resisted so far b/c of side effect possibilities and just tried to cope but now it’s getting VERY OLD. I would love to be able to do things others do, like carry him in a cute Maya sling, but I can’t unless I want spit up all over me.
He’s a “happy spitter” but Mom and Dad are not happy at all.
Any advice or ideas or wisdom? Thanks.

Inactivemy son has been mobile for a while and still spits up tons.
many babies dont grow out of it until the age of 1 or 2 and our GI said her 5 year old still hasnt grown out of it. and its not abnormal.personally i think you are sort of lucky in a way because it sounds like your son has GER as opposed to GERD (acid that comes up and damages the esopogus thus requiring ppI treatment) my son was in so much pain the first 3 months of his life and was on the verge of a feeding aversion.
i really dont mind the spit up because he is no longer in pain…but i do know it gets annoying.there are other motility meds besides reglan. persoanlly i would avoid reglan.

InactiveAll I can say is I fully understand your frustration. I felt very guilty about how much I complained about Myles’ constant puking. He was pain free (on Prevacid), eating, growing well, a pretty good sleeper, and generally happy. BUT the constant puking was extremely frustrating. I think your little guy pukes even more than Myles did, and I was pretty darn sick of it by 7 months. So, if nothing else I can at least say that I understand.
Myles did finally stop at 9 months, and it’s amazing how much easier daily life became. When it’s over you realize how much time you spent dealing with it and you have a lot more time to do other things.
I hope your little guy improves soon. Have you considered Erythromycin? I didn’t use it so I can’t say much about it but some of the moms here have and maybe can tell you if it was successful for them.

InactiveKaelyn spit up until she was close to 14 months old. However, it slowed down considerably around 9 months and again around a year. Alex is 8 months old now and she’s still spitting up a bunch. It’s nothing compared to what Kaelyn used to do,but it’s still pretty significant. Since she’s still eating a very limited amount of solids we are giving her the foods most likely to cause stains as her last solids of the day. We’ve found that she spits up less after that meal.
As far as Reglan goes, we are getting ready to wean Alex off of it. It just makes me really nervous that she’s been on it for so long and I’m not seeing a major benefit. Reglan never did anything for Kaelyn. Bethanechol is another option. Kaelyn was on it for a while as well (again, it didn’t help her, but I know that it’s helped other babies.)

Inactivei think a lot of babies still spit up after 6 mos. shane is just about 8 mos and is spitting up more now than he did last month! and he crawls and even stands holding on to things.. and is intaking sooo much solids, soo who knows? its such a rollercoster! but would be happy to as long as he is not in pain, just keep a lot of bibs around like i do, and a change of clothes near bye and keep in mind that he will most likely out grow it soon! 😉

InactiveAgain, no advice or miracle answers here…just sympathy! I laughed when I read about your carpet because ours is such a mess. Thankfully we’ve had good luck with the Resolve Dual Oxy stuff. I know it’s really only a “temp” fix and over time those stains will re appear but it does work well in the meantime. I also noticed an “orange” stain just tonight that I must have missed. I even found myself at one time only giving Sarah “bland” colored foods because I didn’t want orange and green spit up!
I can’t even count how many cute outfits have been ruined by colored spit up.
I have wondered often about your same question…how much longer??? Hopefully for everyone here…it’s sooner than later!February 8, 2007 at 10:47 am #24338Anonymous
InactiveNot to depress you, but my daughter is almost 2 and still has not outgrown it. What I’ve learned is that there is no magic age. I personally got depressed as each milestone passed and alas, the reflux was still with us. Now I hope for the best, but not waiting for each day until it’s gone has helped us better to cope.
I know that the spitting is annoying, but even more frustrating is dealing with all the complications that can come with a bad case of GERD. It’s awful.
In the meantime, we just bought a new product that worked GREAT to help us get the puke stains out of the carpet. It even removed the purple ones that came from puking up cold medicine or prevacid. It’s called “PINK SOLUTION” and it’s entirely organic etc and non-harmful if ingested.
Here’s the website:

InactiveBrianna will still have an occasional spit up at and she is 14 months, but it is not NEARLY like it was before. My ped said that sometimes crawling makes reflux worse (I can’t remember why) and it takes walking to see some type of relief from reflux (again, maybe not growing out of it, but relief.) I know cleaning the carpets is a pain, but this is how I began to think of reflux and it made it so much easier for me. A year (or two, or even five) that you have to deal with reflux is such a small time compared to the life your LO will live. I know that doesn’t save your carpets, but that thought is what kept me holding on!

InactiveOur carpets are a mess too, I’ve just stopped even trying to clean the spots anymore! We moved into our townhouse in March, and the baby’s carpet wasn’t great to begin with, now there are lovely spots everywhere, even one that’s “crunchy” from the massive power puke Dagney had the other night! (It was like a firehose shooting out!) BUT I keep telling myself that it WILL end eventually. I may try that pink stuff too, but I also found this stuff at KMart called “Totally Toddler” which is supposed to get puke, poop, pee, etc out of clothes and carpet–haven’t tried it yet, though, so I’ll let you know how it goes!
We also have a couch that my husband bought in his bachelor days–once Dagney is mobile, especially pulling up on things, she won’t be allowed near it…it’s off-white and a VERY untreatable fabric! As it is, I have blankets all over it to act as a buffer in case she spits up while I’m holding her on it, but a couple of spots have slipped through…
