Since MAtthew was about 6 weeks old, he would try to “talk” non stop… since waking up until bed time and more and more sounds. For the last 10 days, he has said NOTHING.
He is still really happy and complaining when he does not want something but will not say anything at all… before he would respond to you and everything.
Is this something normal or should i tell the ped? It also coincides with the newly discovered stranger anxiety by the way… he used to be a social baby and all of the sudden, if someone he barely knows looks at him, he freaks out!
March 5, 2006 at 7:30 am #3059AnonymousInactiveI would mention it to the Ped, but all of my nieces did this! I remember their parents mentioning it concerned, but then they picked up again with no issues. Dylan is the exception because he never baby talked to begin with……..
I think it’s normal, but everything that seems concerning is worth mentioning……
March 5, 2006 at 8:13 am #3064AnonymousInactiveThanks Anne Marie… i have heard this about older kids… my cousin´s son for example quit talking all together when he was 10m onths and then only started when he was 14 months… he did not say a word although could understand everything… he is now about 17months and says tons of things… just did not knw it could happen in a baby this little!
I should mention that he still makes noises but only when he is upset…i will tell his ped on tuesday… but i already kind of mentioned it to him and he did not really pay much attention
March 5, 2006 at 11:14 am #3066AnonymousInactiveI think it’s just a phase… Marisa still talks a lot but not as much
as she used to. And definitely big with the stranger anxiety…March 5, 2006 at 11:18 am #3067AnonymousInactiveYes, i kind of think it may be a phase but it is so strange!! He still responds and everything but nothing comes out of his mouth!
How is Marisa doing on her solids?? Hope that is going better than the first time around!
March 5, 2006 at 1:22 pm #3073AnonymousInactiveThanks for asking – it’s going OK I think. Avocado gave a strange rash
on forehead. Ped doesn’t think related – but we do. Carrots (just
finished 5-day trial) seem fine but giving her more rabbit pellet poops
– not helpful since she’s prone to constipation. Just started peaches
this morning…That is odd with the talking. Could it be related to teething at all?
March 5, 2006 at 2:01 pm #3075AnonymousInactiveWell he does not take his hands out of his mouth (and i mean both and they often cause him to throw up these days too) but i am not sure that is it… who knows why he is not blabbing anymore!
March 7, 2006 at 12:16 am #3124AnonymousInactiveI just wanted to address the issue you had about freaking out with strangers. Ashtyn was always fairly social with people as long as mom was holding her. When she was around 18 months or so there was this little old man that works at our pharmacy & he was the 1st person Ashtyn ever flirted with. Then a few months later, one day we walked in & she just looked & him & started screaming. He didn’t even say anything to her. Now all these months later she will tolerate him & not cry but she doesn’t like to look at him much & she doesn’t like it when he talks to her directly. Who can ever figure out these kids? Its always something new.
March 7, 2006 at 10:58 am #3151AnonymousInactivehannah does the same thing NOW with strangers as sherry mentions above, mostly men and anyone who “gets in her cage.” i honestly don’t think there’s anything too terrible about a small child having stranger anxiety, as we should teach them to have caution around folks we don’t know. but it is a concern when it continues. and she was always very outgoing also. chalk it up to development.
March 7, 2006 at 11:11 am #3153AnonymousInactiveNoah did something similar when he was about that age. He wasnt a big “talker” to begin with, but when he stopped altogether, it really concerened me. After a couple weeks, he started saying mama and dada again, and much more frequently. I read somewhere that often times one area of development will cease or slow down while the baby works on another area of develpment. When Noah stopped babbling, his gross motor skills really started to take off.
March 7, 2006 at 2:31 pm #3173AnonymousInactive6 months is about the age that babies start to recognize strangers and will no longer go to other people. what lisa said about stopping one thing to develope another is right. 6 months just seems way too young to be worrying about how much a baby babbles.
March 7, 2006 at 2:40 pm #3174AnonymousInactiveThank you all… i am not worried about the stranger anxiety but just thought it may be somehow connected…
Just came back from the doctor – Lisa and Christine it seems that you are right… the doctor said that babies younger talk and talk because they discover their voices and they like to hear themselves. Then, all of the sudden, they get caught up with something else, like motor skills (which matthew is dev like crazy right now) and they forget about noises…
He said to just make sure Matthew hears well and it is probably a phase that will pass soon!
March 7, 2006 at 2:55 pm #3181AnonymousInactiveThais- I guess i missed this thread. I just wanted to add that my older one also stopped babbling at some point, but now talks up a storm. As for the stranger anxiety, it’s certainly a normal part of development. For Hailey, it’s so severe that our doc said she’s “atypical”, and he would classify her as having a “social anxiety”….great!
Also, I noticed that Matthew has decreased his meds. That’s great!!! Just wondering, how did you know that his reflux was better? I know it sounds stupid, but with silent refluxers with feeding aversions, I think things are often harder to figure out.
How is he doing otherwise?
March 7, 2006 at 3:08 pm #3186AnonymousInactiveHey Lori
Yes, we slowly stopped most of the meds… i know what you mean with not knowing. For us, with the tube, it was pretty clear. There was about 2 weeks (not one after the other, because he ate some in between) when we fed Matthew every meal through the tube. And remember, teh tube is so thin that you can really only do formula, so it was really really thin. Well the first week was in December, right after we had the biopsy and we knew there was no irritation, so either no reflux or under control wiht the meds. Well even though he refused to eat, he was perfectly happy after his meals, even through the night when we were doing 8 hours of feeding and he was sleeping FLAT. The doctor suggested to start taking meds out. We did… the second week he totally stopped eating we gave him all feedings again through the tube, and he did not cry, no fuss, nothing!
So we have been on 15mg of prevacid for maybe a month now and he is fine. If we did not have the tube, i would not know if he was eating because of no pain, so i understand why you are asking.
Matthew has been doing great this week with feedings… no breakfast but he has lunch (maybe 4 ounces of meat with veggies and 4 ounces of yogurt), then afternoon he has 4 ounces of yogurt and 4 of fruit and at dinner same as for lunch! HE IS MY LITTLE SUPERSTAR… but i am not allowed to feed him and so i am not doing it and he seems to be doing so much better without me around! Problem is he is EXTREMELY active, and burning of the calories.
I wrote an update in the feeding forum too….
I hope Hailey is doing better… i know you had some issues and you were going to post in the HELP section but i don´t think you ever did??
March 7, 2006 at 3:11 pm #3189AnonymousInactiveThanks Thais, I did post, but it was one of the wacked out ones from the past few days so it was deleted. That’s great about the eating!!!!! Maybe I should stop feeding hailey and see if she does better?s&h’s mum2006-3-7 15:11:45
