Seth had his follow-up GI appt. today. The one big main change is that we are going to trial him with the Rice Dream milk for about 4-5 weeks to see if he can digest proteins and if all goes well with that then we can add cheese and whole milk (yikes!). This will be a slow transition as the GI said we may have to mix it with Alimentum at first in order for him to take it. We are also supposed to thicken the rice milk so the only difference is the formula change so if there is a reaction or reflux episode we will know what it is. If anyone has any tips on how to mix two formulas/milks (ratios) and transition down to one, I’d love to hear them!
He thought the Prevacid dose will still good for him so we’ll see how it goes. I really think that teething has been a main problem with the reflux acting up again and maybe now that he is walking and staying more upright it will become manageable again.

January 31, 2006 at 12:15 pm #364AnonymousInactiveHey Tiffany – just wanted to tell you that my dd Sophia didn’t tolerate proteins really well until 14/15 months and even then it was slow but steady. .. we started introing milk then because of a reaction at 12 months. BUT she made a spontaneous reflux recovery at 18 months which is when we were able to take her off of Prevacid completely. Guess I just wanted to tell you that no matter what happens – yeah, your almost there! It took us about a month and a half to get her off of the 30 mgs of Prevacid she was on which I started at around 16 months after successful milk trials.
Hang in there – its wonderful when it happens!

Good luck!!
January 31, 2006 at 4:44 pm #393AnonymousInactiveHi Donna,
Just chiming in. Our Ped and Ped GI were fine with the rice milk, but Dylan was well on the charts and growing fine, so i don’t know if they would have said differently had we been in a different boat, but the conversation of the fat content in the rice milk was never an issue.
January 31, 2006 at 4:54 pm #394AnonymousInactivewe are at the bottom of the chart (but still on it 🙂
He is only 10th percentile. so maybe that is why. Thanks for chiming in!!!!
January 31, 2006 at 7:00 pm #402AnonymousInactiveHi Donna, they did not mention trying to add extra fats with the rice milk but I am a little worried about it. Seth was in the 26th percentile at his 12 month which was down a bit from his nine month visit but they don’t seem too concerned since he is still gaining nicely. DH and I actually talked today about waiting a few more weeks to try this because he is teething and not eating solids well at all. I’m afraid if I mess with the formula and he won’t take it, he won’t get enough calories.
January 31, 2006 at 7:15 pm #404AnonymousInactiveTiffany –
Could you try to add in rice milk while still giving him his formula? When we bought rice milk for his birthday cake I thought it would be interesting to try some in his sippy cup to see if he liked it and he did, so we’ve been giving him that sometimes with his meals, and then he still gets his bottle right when he gets up, before bed, and a little bit before lunch. Maybe I’m overdoing it, but that way I know that he’s getting the calories from his bottles but we’re introducing new liquids in a cup.
I don’t know – maybe that’s worth a shot so you don’t have to feel like you’re completely giving up on the formula? Or is that kind of going against what your gi suggested?
Here I am with these good ideas – meanwhile Owen wouldn’t take any of his bottle before bed so I guess I shouldn’t be offering any advice!
January 31, 2006 at 9:19 pm #414AnonymousInactiveHi Laura, I think that is a good idea. I was thinking about that too. Maybe still give him the Alimentum in bottles but try the rice milk in the sippy as a bonus. If he drinks it, GREAT, if not no big loss. GI didn’t say how to give it or that we had to mix it just that we may have to in order for him to accept it. It’s just so stressful- Seth was eating so well and now he hardly eats anything at mealtimes(but he will scarf up every cookie crumb on his tray/clothes!). His bottom molars and two back top teeth are finally poking through so I hope we are almost at the end of this! It’s nice to hear Owen’s taking the rice milk – I was afraid all of this is easier said than done!
Sorry about Owen. I saw your other post about him not eating. I would just keep an eye on it and try not to stress too much (impossible, I know). Maybe offer him some extra liquids tomorrow and not even worry about solids. Have you ever tried the Pedialyte popsicles? We have not but I keep meaning to pick some up. Maybe he would like those?? Keep us updated.
