InactiveMy daughter had pretty severe silent reflux and Sandifer’s and was weaned off 30 mg of Prevacid at 14 mos. Around that time she was getting her one year molars, so it was hard to tell if she felt bad due to reflux, but she wasn’t tilting her neck so we thought everything was ok. In hindsight, I don’t know. She started a night waking habit shortly after, but we had moved and I just thought it was the new environment. Then she started getting ear infections… She had double ear infections 3 mos after and never even had a cold. Anyway, no one ever mentioned reflux again and I didn’t even think about it. However, our son’s new ped GI was asking about her history and present behavior. I told her she’s very irritable and seems to feel bad a lot. I take her to the doctor a lot but she never has a fever and they can only find a red throat. There’s days she eats like a pig and is so happy and days she won’t touch any food and just cries at the drop of a hat. But, two year olds do these things, right? By the way, she has a speech delay and can’t really communicate what hurts. Anyway, she says in severe cases it’s usually a problem for several years and she gave me a two week Prevacid trial for her. Her own son was on it until he was 6, but he was actually vomiting still.
Ok, I’ll get to my questions. Can anyone with an older child with reflux tell me how their child was behaving prior to restarting the medication? Also, she gave me solutabs, but my daughter is chewing them. I told her to suck on it, but she’s two… I tried putting some of my husbands in some chocolate syrup, but she picked up on it and wouldn’t even touch it after the first lick. Not sure what to do, other than try dissolving the solutab and force feeding it to Taylor. Is there a better way?

InactiveSeth is 15 months and has always been on Prevacid so I can’t help much there except to say I am sorry you are still having issues. I hope the medicine will help.
About chewing the solutabs, Seth does that too and it does make them less effective. To get around this, I will give him the solutab on a baby spoon with just a drop of water. This dissolves it enough where he can’t chew it.

Inactivehello again! andy is back on prevacid, 30 mg twice a day after confirming a small hiatal hernia and damage to his esophagus.
we also weaned at 14 months because he just seemed peachy. we kept at the gluten free, casein free, milk free, egg free diet so i know it wasn’t his intolerances that made him start kicking me at night.
actually at about 20 months of age he started pummeling me at night and bolting up screaming. he went through croup right around that time so i thought..okay he is acting up due to croup. he was cutting his molars at that time so i thought okay its the teeth. once all that went away and the night time pummeling didn’t stop i took him into the ped asking her to check his ears.
perfectly healthy little sucker so we decided that in the middle of my denial that he was exhibiting reflux symptoms. so he started prevacid again at 30 mg capsules once a day in his food.
then the vomiting started again…practically undigested food coming up 2 hours later. that earned him an endoscopy again and wouldn’t you know it we find out that he had new complications.
now he is on the solutab and did try to chew on it but i showed him how to melt it in his mouth. try a smarties candy first and have her suck on that. if she tries to bite then you can show her how to move it around her mouth and opening yours to let her see it dissolve.
i know it sounds silly but i make smacking yum sounds and move my mouth around to show andy that i still have it my mouth and he tries to copy my silly sounds. i know if he is making silly sounds he isn’t swallowing it.
you know i sure hope he outgrows it but i think i am bracing myself for having to teach him how to manage his little body for the rest of his life. i was rather disappointed, feeling somewhat cynical about all the medical community’s hype that kids outgrow this by 1 yr. i am even more cynical now about the hype that they outgrow this by 18 months.
