Have been doing a search on blueberries but haven’t found much except
one post about how it triggered colic-like symptoms for one poster’s
daughter. Otherwise, I just keep seeing the chart for introducing
solids to allergic child – which shows blueberries as OK for 6-9 months.Has anyone here successfully fed blueberry puree to their GERDling?
Gerber Tender Harvest (organic) makes a pear/blueberry mixture that I
was looking at but haven’t tried.I totally craved blueberries myself while pregnant!
March 8, 2006 at 8:14 am #3226AnonymousInactiveMy ped said that it’s okay after 9 months, but that all the “berry fruits” i.e. blueberries, raspberries, strawberries as well as citrus i.e. pineapple, orange, etc, were the more allergenic of the fruits. But that is for typical children, I don’t know about allergy prone kids. Maybe Amber (bree and ty’s mom) knows as I think she’s done a lot of research on allergies lately. I’ve heard that as far as reflux goes, citrus fruit can trigger acid attacks for some people with GERD because of the acidity of the fruit itself.

He never had any issues with them and would gobble the whole thing up. They are pretty messy – he’d always end up blue after eating them!
Owen didn’t have too many reactions to solid foods, other than dairy, but he was fine with them.
Good luck!

March 8, 2006 at 9:14 am #3240AnonymousInactiveThanks guys. Maybe will try it in a few more weeks after some other foods.
March 8, 2006 at 9:17 am #3241AnonymousInactiveHailey also loved blueberry blends. I don’t think blueberries are in the same category as strawberries and raspberries as far as allergies are concerned. I’m pretty sure they are low on the list of allergens. I’ve seen this in more than one place. I think I introduced them at around 7-8 months or so. I agree with Laura, the worst thing is that they do stain. Now that she eats regular blueberries, I have to strip her down before giving them to her! They turn the highchair tray blue too!

When you introduce them, just watch carefully for anything weird and don’t introduce anything new along with them.

On my list of foods to avoid it says “strawberries and other berry fruits” so I guess that includes blueberries. They are not in the highest allergy group like nuts and shellfish but still could cause a reaction. I think you can try these foods but you need to stop at the first sign of a reaction. Also if you try these foods too early then you can have more chance of having a lifelong allergy.

Michael loved the gerber berry blends and now he is a blueberry fiend! He loves them and shovels them in faster than I can give them to him. He has had no reaction to them however, as with Katharine, they definitely get him poopin! I usually use them if he is backed up and a few hours later, wow, have the wipes handy for that diaper change!

**Many
believe that blueberries fall under the “no berries until
after age 12 months old” rule. Blueberries are not
really a common allergen – they are not in the “berry” family.
Blueberries are related to cranberries – cranberries appear on
many lists of “least allergenic foods” Blueberries are
not related to strawberries, raspberries and the like.
Those “true” berries may be mild to highly allergenic.
In the book,
Managing Allergy and Intolerance in the Allergic Infant
(published for Health Care
Professionals and The General Public),
blueberries are recommended between 6-9 months old.
There are also several other pediatric allergy books that say
that blueberries are ok from 6-9 months old as well -
