breastfeeding and prevacid

I am breastfeeding my 5 wk old and he will be starting prevacid soon. I have read that you should give it on an empty stomach and feed them 30 min later. Also he is on pepcid until the prevacid kicks in. I have also read that you should give it 3x a day. He will be on the prevacid packets. How does all that work when you are breastfeeding? I still have to wake him sometimes to eat. Usually he eats and then takes forever to go to sleep and by time he does go to sleep he only gets about an hour before I have to wake him. Also, I’m not sure when I can stop waking him for feedings. I hope all this makes sense. He is crying in the background. Very distracting. I need to get to him. Thanks for the help.

It is hard, especially with a baby that young to stay on this schedule. There were times I desperately wanted to switch to Zegerid for this reason.

What I started doing with Myles was to sneak his first dose into him while he was still asleep first thing in the morning. I only mix his dose with about 2 ml’s of water. I’d wake him a little and slowly administer it while he was groggy/half asleep – a tiny little bit at a time so he wouldn’t choke. Then give him his nuk and pat him back to sleep. Then wait the 30 minutes and wake him up and feed him.

The mid-day dose is a little easier. Just give it about 1/2 before you think he will want to eat again.

And the last dose 1/2 hour before his last daytime feeding.

The Pepcid can be given with food so you can give it any time as long as it is at least two hours before or after the Prevacid.

How often does he eat now?

With my babies I woke them to feed every three hours during the day, but did not wake them at all after 10pm. Got them used to eating more during the day and sleeping more at night early on. I think I continued waking them during the day to eat until they were about 10 – 12 weeks old. By then they usually were waking on their own and eating more at each feeding so they could go longer without eating.

I hope some of this helps. Myles didn’t start Prevacid until he was 4 1/2 months old, so he was on a more regular schedule by then. It must be very difficult with such a young baby. Hopefully some other moms out there have some more advice for you.

I’m breastfeeding a near 6 month old and right now we’re on the packets

as well.

Even though she’s 6mo, she still wants to eat frequently and giving her

those packets has been a nightmare becuase of the waiting and the

volume I have to give her (of the meds).

So yes, I’ve got an appointment to see the doc to switch her to Zegrid. Or

compounded prilosec (compounded with unflavored sodium bicarbonate

or caracream/chocobase). You don’t have to wait to feed them with the

sodium bicarb. because it acts as buffer.

GERD babies are supposed to eat frequent, small meals to minimize

discomfort and spit up. So waiting so long, so many times a day seems

contrary to that.

Sorry I’m not more help. I just didn’t have a good experience with the

packets…
