InactiveTracy – how is Ian doing?

InactiveHi Karen-Thanks for checking in.
Great temperment-really enjoying the weather, laughing, sitting, etc.
Not great digestion (still)-Way watery poos, some with mucous. He’s on nothing but elecare and prevacid but the prevacid is now being compounded to make sure it’s not lactose (which doesn’t seem to be the case since no change). Still using probiotics but really seems to be doing nothing at all. Compounded prevacid may be an issue as well. It’s only been a week but the dose is so low (15 a day) GI refuses to raise it and said “you have to see another doctor if you want that prescription” It’s only being mixed with sodium biocarbonate and it’s for 2 weeks at a time. The reason I know it’s not doing much is Ian’s on day 8 of cold and fine except for MAJOR congestion -nasal and throat mucous (had him checked yesterday and it’s not in ears or chest thankfully). But ped thinks because his meds were changed two days after he got the cold that the reflux is aggravated and tends to heighten congestion around eating times. Also, the congestion has been the same for 4 days now-no signs improving day by day, not even a little. Frustrating! Really like GI but she’s so conservative about meds. So now for the last 4 days – bottle refusal. And, he’s hungry. Grunting while eating and stopping so I think it burns. Naturally, am terrified of ulcer rehap but am trying to remain calm for now. He’s taking 20oz a day but with a lot of time and effort on our end. Sucrose test is delayed until next Friday because of equipment problem and still no solids because his butt is irritated enough. Going on bad poops week 8 now…Osmolarity is still a considerating but because he didn’t have this before on Elecare, it’s still fair to question that theory the doctors say. And they still haven’t ruled out a corn syrup intolerance but then again – what will he eat, right?
Aren’t you glad you asked

I’m so resigned to give up at this point. My dh and I just feel so beaten down – Everyone said it would get better as he got older and it just get’s worse.
How’s M doing??

InactiveCorn syrup intolerance – oh my. How would they test for that? Do any formulas not have it at all?
I’m so sorry you’re continuing to have problems and really hope they can figure something out soon.
Very frustrating re Dr. M – don’t understand why she won’t raise the
dose – he seems to definitely need more. Do you like the GI doc at the
feeding hospital? Can you talk to him? What does Dr. M say about his bottle refusal and the congestion? How is he sleeping?Marisa is doing well – she had been pooping totally normally and
somewhat mushy (for her anyway) all week until today – tiny cat turd
again. But hopefully it’s just a one-off. She’s been waking WAY early
this week – we think combination of hunger, teething and heat – our
apartment has been so hot the past few nights.April 22, 2006 at 8:28 pm #6590Anonymous
InactiveFrom what I have read, the only formula that doesnt have the corn syrup is Alimentum RTF.
Tracy, so sorry things are so difficult. Hang in there, hope the new tests give you some answers.

InactiveHave they done a reducing substances test? I’m not sure, but I would think this would be what could test for the corn syrup intolerance. The reducing substances tests for any undigested sugar in the stool. Hailey was tested for this and it was positive. Her doctor said that 9 times out of 10, it’s a lactose intolerance but it can absolutely be other sugars as well. There are special formulas out there that are basically carbohydrate free.
Hope things improve soon!

InactiveLori ~ I was always told that any stool test (culture, c-diff, reducing substances, etc) had to be free of any contamination including urine, water and it also can’t touch the diaper.
