InactiveWe just put our 9 month old back on zegerid, we were on the 20mg but it caused a lot of gas and bloating, so we tried the prevacid solutabs and it wasn’t working….now the pedi agreed to try the zegerid 40 mg mixed according to Dr P. He has had gas again, just not as bad as on the 20mg, but it is still bothersome. We are using the mylanta.
I noticed some ladies are using the calcium carbonate to mix it with…can someone tell me what this stuff is and if you used because of gas issues? How do you mix it…jsut in case I decide to try it. Also, I can’t seem to find tums quick packs, so those are probably out of the question to use.
I know the marci kids website suggest dosing be at three times a day.Dr P knows I am giving his doses twice a day…but I also have seen on here you should give it three times a day or it’s useless, if he is already having gas problems and tummy pain and hiccups wouldn’t three times a day make it worse?
One thing I also don’t know is does this medication take time to settle down and kick in?
Sorry for all of the questions, but as I am sure you ladies know, this whole process can be so tiring! Thank you

InactiveHey there! I’m an oldie and haven’t been around a lot, but we did use both the 20 mg and 40 mg Zegerid with our son. We switched to the 40 mg for the same reasons you named, AND we had the same initial problems with the Mylanta as you are naming.
What we did was switch to using TUMS. I’m unfamiliar with what the quick packs are, but we just used the SMooth Dissolve TUMS. They come in various flavors and some do contain milk, but the Tropical Fruit kind worked for us. I would just dissolve, or crush about a half a tablet in some water and suck that up into the syringe of Zegerid.I would hope that once the Mylanta is out of his system and the Zegerid is working as it should, the hiccups, etc. would lessen. Those systems you describe could simply be from the reflux itself and not the Mylanta… it’s hard to tell, I know.It will take a few days for the Zegerid to really start working, especially if he hasn’t been on a good dose of a PPI yet. I know many moms saw vast improvement after a week. I think it was more like day 10 for us.However, if after several days, he is still miserable, then you can try something else.Does he have any intolerances/allergies??July 19, 2010 at 8:53 am #66728Anonymous
InactiveThank you for replying… I’m sorry you went through the same thing, but glad there is someone who understands were we are at.
As far as we know there are no intolerance’s/allergies. I know this may sound dumb but what would be the obvious signs?I have some tums smoothies here and will give it a try when I mix it today. He is sleeping all night again since the change back to Zegerid and his naps are better as well, so that is a huge step, it’s just getting these hiccups under control and he is moaning a lot.
The moaning can really wear on you for sure. I am guessing something has t be bothering him.
He is also coughing a lot again.
I can’t wait for the day when this stuff is behind us! It seems like his whole 9 months of life has been a guessing game.ImHis2010-07-19 08:53:56

InactiveSome obvious intolerance/allergy signs could include things like rashy skin/excema, constipation or straining like constipated, foul gas, painful gas and then the more obvious food allergy signs that docs pick up on are the hives, swelling ,etc…
I was pretty sure my son had several intolerances… his gas was SO foul and his poop was slimy almost snotty. He would grunt like his tummy hurt and strain to poop but then have really soft, almost blowout like poos.Anyway, getting him comfy required the PPI and me being on a special diet…Good luck. I’m glad to hear he seems to be sleeping better.July 19, 2010 at 10:56 am #66730Anonymous
InactiveHe doesn’t have any of those problems. He is on an added rice starch formula, we tried changing it a few days ago to regular with some rice cereal in it…bad mistake..then he had the foul gas a poop! We quickly changed back. My thought was that this ar formula has lactose and he is fine, so he should be fine on regular…for some reason he wasn’t. It was also a gentle formula.
But hey, he is all good on his current one so we are gonna stick with it. -
