InactiveI posted the other week about how happy I was that DD’s reflux and spitting up was dramatically improving with the introduction of veggies. But that lasted only a couple weeks. When I started the fruits, it seemed to get worse again. She started on sweet potatoes mixed with rice cereal, and then went to apples, then carrots, bananas, pears, carrots, squash. I haven’t really paid attention to how she is each day depending on which foods we gave. But I do wonder if some of the foods are maybe too acidic and making the problem worse??? She is still (overall) better than she was before solids. But I really thought the problem was almost behind us (spit up decreased from 30+ times a day to only a few times a day ) Now she is back to spitting up a few times/to several times after each feeding, with the spit up being more mucousy and smelly again.

Inactivehi,
yes i personally think that they can.. we were safe with sweet potatoes, and bananas, squash, even peas.. but i do think the more acidic fruits aggrivate it a bit.. or maybe because the apples and pears are very thin as well.. not sure.. but i try not to give to much of them, i always mix them w/something else…
also do you use the powder form of alimentum..? just wondering if that sits ok with her, because shane can’t soo i thought maybe thats why he has a harder time with the thinner foods as well.. i have to make his cereal thick too.

InactiveMyles had a lot of ups and downs when it came to his spitting/vomitting. Some weeks were awful, and then we’d have a good week or two. Of course, I always thought his reflux was abating when he had a good week, but then it would come back and he’d be puking all day again. This back and forth thing ocurred even before he was on any solids, so it wasn’t related to that.
As for solids, I’ve read here than some babies have trouble with ascorbic acid which is in some of the fruits…so maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe go back to just veggies for a week or so and then gradually start adding the fruits again to see which ones she tolerates.

InactiveAidan couldn’t do bananas (the baby food bananas have citric acid in them), or carrots, or apples. Pears were fine, so were peas, green beans and sweet potatoes. He couldn’t do squash either.Peaches were a horrible mistake as were plums. He liked prunes though.

InactiveBrianna seemed OK with everything but peaches (although it was harder to tell becuase she was the silent reflux type). I would take her off the fruits for about a week, and then introduce them again one at a time, for five days each…and maybe this time keep a journal…I know that is a pain since we all have just loads of time on our hands (LOL), but I did it and it was super helpful. Good luck!

InactiveThanks! I wouldn’t have suspected the bananas or squash, I think I may try a week of just sweet potatoes again and see what happens. Is it bad to not offer such a variety???

Inactivei think its ok as long as you have different colors. like when i started i did sweet potatoes.. one night and peas the next night.. i kept on those two for about 2 weeks! and bananas in the morning one day and prunes and plums the next day. plus she is only 5mos. so i dont think its a big deal.

InactiveKaelyn’s allergist said that when we start solids with Alexandra we should do only one food for a week. Each new food should be for a week before trying another one. (this is because her sister has allergies, but if you are worried about reactions, my guess is that it would work in your situation as well) Once you are on to the second food, you can still continue with the first food, so there would be some variety.

Inactiveyea… i meant that as well.. i didnt mean i started sweet potatoes and peas and plum and prunes and bananas at the same time.. first sweetpotatoes for about 5 days.. than peas .. 5 days.. and for 2 weeks i just did those two.. than bananas.. etc. but i was saying i did a different color of 2 veggies and 2 fruits and i thought that was enough for a while. as long as there are different colors, i dont think you need a huge variety.
i think this makes sense
sorry, surviving on 4 hrs of sleep

InactiveI noticed that when we introduced solids with Luke, the more we introduced the more unsettled his stomach/reflux was. I think their systems need time to adjust. I hope this helps.
