InactiveCan someone give me the lowdown on DGE? What happens if you just don’t treat it? How do you know that’s really what it is? What are the symptoms……..
Wondering if Owen maybe has this? Now on table food and it seems that 4 hours after he has eaten, he’s puking up whole chunks of food.Reflux is not over by any stretch! Help please!September 30, 2007 at 8:32 pm #43550Anonymous
InactiveHi Erica,
Bryce has DGE. For him the symptoms are constant throwing up, even hours after eating. He was throwing up so much that he was losing weight. I think another symptom is feeling full quickly, although that was hard to notice with Bryce since he’s tube fed. It’s not really necessary to treat it unless it’s causing weight problems, aspiration, or other such problems. There is a test that can be taken to determine DGE, or some docs just choose to try the medicine to see if it helps.

InactiveMy dd has dge and this was determined with a milk scan, she had 2 radioactive milk scans at CHOP in Philadelphia. They showed that within an hrs time, only 20% was emtied from the stomach, the other 80% remained. Normal range is for 50-65 % to remain. First, she was treated with reglan, that made her nutty. She is on erythromycin 2 ml three times a day. She has never been a thrower upper after meals only a silent refluxer. Initially, she would eat every 5-6 hrs, with erythro, she’ll eat food every 4-4.5 hrs. My gi doc says she should grow out of this by 18 mo or we would consider doing a pyloroplasty to widen her pylorus which is quite narrow hence the dge.

InactiveOkay, that’s what I thought. It’s hard for me to determine what the increased throwing up is about. When they did one if my ds scopes, they said he had a small pyloric opening and doc thought when he was young maybe dge, it’s really not causing him growth issues right now, he’s still small, but he’s just catching up from not gaining for the first 5 months of life. Just wanted to see if it’s something I should even consider bringing up to the doc at his 1yr check.

InactiveHailey also has suspected dge… our doc didn’t want to anything about it. We tried domperidone, but it didn’t do anything I could see for her. She never vomits much unless she’s sick, but still silent refluxes at 2.5.

InactiveErica, just a question for you regarding your child’s dge,
do they fill up quickly????It takes Adi about 4 4.5 hs to empty after a meal, also she never cries out of hunder, I just offer her food around 4 4-5 hrs after last meal or bottle. What does your meals consist of??Adi will have 3 -4 ounces of yogurt-then be done. However if I offer her a bottle 1-1.5 hrs later, she’ll take about 4 oz.She takes a total of 20-22 oz a day w/ 3 small meals.October 2, 2007 at 6:51 am #43613Anonymous
InactiveAdismom- the part about filling up quickly doesn’t sound like him. He will eat a lot sometimes and others just a little, but usually he refuses if its a texture that he doesn’t like. Otherwise, I think pretty normal for a baby his age– he’ll be one on Saturday.
He does definately get hungry- 3 meals a day plus 2 snacks (small things) and 2-3 bottles 6-8 oz.The part that made me think DGE is that he is going through a bad reflux time right now and he eats supper around 5-6 pm and then bedtime bottle at 7:30 and at around 10 like clockwork, he starts to cough and it’s a dry cough but eventually he gags and throws up. There is usually whole chunks of food that he had for supper in it. Although last night, it was 1:30 in the morning- not much puke, just a couple of chunks of food.It doesn’t seem to bother him other than make him cry of course, but he settles down quickly. He seems to be gaining weight which has always been an issue. I take him in next Thursday for 1 yr check. I haven’t had him weighed in 6-8 weeks, so it will be fun to see what he weighs!October 2, 2007 at 5:36 pm #43652Anonymous
InactiveErica, your some may not have DGE if he enjoys eating and doen’t throw up as much. he may have a slow digestion only with certain foods. Fatty foods, fibers, proteins, takes longer to digest, even w/o having DGE problems. I hope it gets better as he gest older.
Adismom,
your dd can empty liquid better than solids. Dfferent mussles controls the emptying of solids and liquids. In general, liquids digest faster and easier; solids takes longer. If your little ones still eats ok, she might have mild DGE.I hope she outgrows it soon.Kendra has DGE, and hers is significantly. At 30 minutes she empties only 33% of 2 ounces of milk. She is on med and it seems to help.Leo -
