InactiveWell, there have sure been a lot of kids on here who have gotten ear tubes lately, and Bryce is about to join in. He’s had two ear infections since Christmas that have both taken two rounds of antibiotics to get rid of and the fluid in his ears has just never gone away. We had his hearing tested on Friday, and he failed it. It’s just a mild hearing loss. His tympanogram was flat, so they said it was likely from the fluid in his ears. We took him to the ENT today, and he confirmed there was still a lot of fluid, and recommended ear tubes. We scheduled the surgery for April 13. I think it will do him a lot of good and hopefully help his hearing.

InactiveGood Luck to Bryce, we’ll be praying for him and for you too. I know he’s had other surgeries but it still is scary! Getting tubes was the best thing we did to help Kayleigh’s hearing, I still get teary eyed when I remember her startling at the sounds of the birds in the tree outside and the neighbors lawnmower. So I guess “welcome to the club”! LOL
BTW~ The ENT tested the fluid he found when he did Kayleigh’s and it was stomach acid for the most part

InactiveAwww……yet another surgery for Bryce.
I guess this will be one of easiest ones he’s had, though. I hope and pray it goes well and that his hearing is retored after the surgery. Good luck.March 27, 2007 at 10:13 am #28648Anonymous
InactiveAll of these procedures are such mixed emotions. It is all great things to help Bryce, but it is still hard on you. You are doing so great for Bryce! I hope this helps him hear tremendously well!
Good Luck and keep us posted!!

InactiveGood luck with it, Heather. It has been the most amazing thing for Hailey (she also had flat tymps and a mild-moderate loss). She started talking the afternoon she got the tubes in. She woke up from her nap crying and I said “I’m coming”, to which she mimicked “Eye Commee” as if she’d never really heard it before. I hope it’s just as great for Bryce.
Can they do the tubes and the eye sx at the same time?

InactiveThanks everyone. Yes, this will be Bryce’s 5th surgery
, but it is still hard to see him have to endure one more thing, and it is a little scary, even though it’s a simple procedure. Lynn – Just wondering, did you have to ask the ENT to test Kayleigh’s ear fluid? Or is that just something they do? I definitely wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what’s in Bryce’s ears. He’s sure had a lot come out of his nose.
Lori – Actually, I pushed to have Bryce seen by the ENT at Primary Children’s Hospital for that reason. I was hoping to have the ear and the eye surgery done at the same time. However, we couldn’t even get in to get evaluated by the eye surgeon until April 25, and his ear tube surgery is on the 13th. I think the eye surgery might be done in the eye center next door anyway, so maybe that wouldn’t have worked anyway.
I hope he does okay with all these anesthetics & sedations. I worry about that more than anything. He has to be sedated again in May for a heart echo too.
Someday all this will be behind us. March 27, 2007 at 12:04 pm #28660Anonymous
InactiveHeather, they didn’t test the pH of the fluid in Hailey’s ears. He just said they were packed. I figured that there must be reflux in her ears though given the amount that would come out through her nose.
I’ll be praying for Bryce to have an easy time.

InactiveCan we join as well? Hunter is scheduled for April 10th.
Heather, I’ll keep Bryce in our prayers too. I know these little ones are so strong!
Lynn- I LOVE your daughter’s name-especially the spelling.

My Kayleigh is 8 now, my how the time goes…….

InactiveHeather — i hope it makes a difference for Bryce! For Matthew, they just did the gas — i think it is pretty standard… i left him there asleep, walked to the recovery room and he was back with me in less than 10minutes, fully awake… so it is pretty quick.
Will be thinking of you

InactiveHeather~ We never asked, the ENT came out and said he was quite shocked to find as much fluid as there was and it seemed off so he sent it to the lab on his own. Even though her reflux is controlled (for the most part) if she gets a bad cold and it gets to her ears she drains very acidic fluid from them. UGH the smell is horrible. Bryce will have lots of prayers coming his way with both upcoming surgeries. And some for Mom and Dad who will be sitting not so patiently in the waiting room. Good Luck this has to be tough.

Inactivehuntersmom -Wow, the same week! Good luck with Hunter’s surgery too. I’ll be praying for you and Hunter as well. This procedure sure has become common hasn’t it?
Thais – Thanks. Your description made me feel better. I knew it was a simple and quick procedure, but that doesn’t even seem worth worrying about!
Everyone – Thanks so much for the prayers! I know they’ll help.

And just wondering – how are the kids after the surgery? Are they in any pain or discomfort afterward.

InactiveGood Luck! Ear tubes were the best thing for Alexis! She started to talk a lot more! She also started to eat a lot better, due to the tubes and her tonsils out! A friend of mine her 7 month old son just had tubes placed yesterday, and he was back to eating, playing, etc within a few hours! Tube surgery is nothing compare to what little Bryce has gone through so far! But I know what you mean about all the sedation, his poor little body! I’ll be thinking of you guys, always!
