For those of you who remember our neverending saga, it seems like we’ve been waiting forever for Hailey to get scoped… since December for the appointment to see one the only GI’s who can scope under 22 lbs, got that appointment at the end of March, got the date for the scope of July 11th. Then they said it will take 4-6 weeks until they have the results and I am seen by the GI again to discuss them. Well, I was pretty ticked off at having to wait so long, but couldn’t get on the cancellation list (for URGENT cases only).
Today I got a phone call saying that our scope date is being moved until September 12th because the doctor is going to be away. I was so mad and I called the office to complain but no one was there. I left a message, but I know that they won’t do anything about it. I was put on the cancellation list by the appointment secretary, but she told us that we’re so far down that there’s no way we’ll get an appointment sooner, and not to complain to her because she’s just the messenger.
Sometimes I just can’t believe this! I really wonder what I did in a former life to have such a comedy of errors thrown my way? This is just so unfair. Hailey will be 17 months old by the time she even gets scoped and 1.5 years old by the time we get the results. What kind of health care system is that! (Sorry for the rant)

May 19, 2006 at 3:37 pm #8368AnonymousInactiveOh my goodness – that is just ridiculous and totally unfair. I’m so sorry Lori…
So if Hailey were 22 pounds she could have the endo no problem? Crazy…
May 19, 2006 at 3:42 pm #8371AnonymousInactiveNo, even if she weighed 22 pounds there would be a wait, but probably only 2 months instead of 4. But you have to actually weigh 22 pounds before they will book it as a day procedure (vs and OR procedure), so who knows how long that will be.
May 19, 2006 at 8:32 pm #8401AnonymousInactiveYOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! Lori, that is so ridiculous. There isnt any other doc around who is qualified to scope an infant?! And why on earth do you have to wait 4 to 6 weeks for the results of the scope? The lab results should be done within a few days to a week at the latest. When Noah had his scope, the GI doc came out and saw us immediately after the procedure and told us what he saw. Then we got the results over the phone 5 days later, from the nurse, about the biopsies.
I am so sorry that you have to deal with this. I’m frustrated for you . The health care system there must be a huge PAIN. Have you ever thought about moving to the States? Not that the docs here are any better, but atleast you can get things done in a timely manner. Noah was scoped 4 days after my GI appt. His swallow study and upper GI were scheduled within a week or two. The longest I ever had to wait was 3 months for his MRI. Other than that, we’ve gotten his tests done pretty quickly. I just wish there was something that could be done to move things along for Hailey. It’s not right to make you wait that long to get some answers.
May 19, 2006 at 9:08 pm #8404AnonymousInactiveI know, Lisa, it’s so awful with health care here. It’s great in that everyone has access, but sometimes the care that you have access to isn’t worth it. The only GI’s who can scope under 22 pounds are at Sick Kids hospital… anyone from the team can do it, but basically it has to be the GI you’re followed by. After they weigh 22 pounds, you can have it done at an adult hospital by the GI who is following you. But again there are waits to get in to see the docs, and waits to get the appointments.
May 20, 2006 at 12:37 am #8423AnonymousInactiveThat is just insane. You must be so frustrated. Have you investigated how much it would cost to have it done at a private hospital or a hospital in the US? Would it be done any quicker if she was admitted to hospital? I feel so sorry for you and Hailey it is just not fair.
May 20, 2006 at 9:12 am #8428AnonymousInactiveThat is just so sad! I don’t think they even care how that is affecting her! How much does she weigh now?
May 20, 2006 at 2:58 pm #8442AnonymousInactiveThanks. I could just cry thinking about it. Amber, there are no such things as private hospitals here or clinics for that matter. As for having it done in the US, no insurance would pay for it b/c Hailey has a preexisting health condition. We’d go absolutely broke paying for it.
