InactiveHi! We use Dr. Brown’s bottles and I have tried every level nipple and even tried the Y nipple, but the formula came out too fast and choked him. I don’t remember what I did for my daughter, but we used the same bottles. Please help!

InactiveHow much cereal are you using? We use the level 2 nipples (still) but only add 1tsp per 2 ounces (just enough to stop her choking).
I’m surprised that it won’t come out of a level 3 DB nipple. One thing I noticed when we thickened, was that it didn’t “flow” out of the bottle (in that if we turned it upside down nothing came out) but when she sucked on it, she got the milk out.
It’s basically trial and error. Some people have had to blend it to get it to come out. We never could use the Y-cut either because it was too fast.
Good luck. It’s frustrating until you get things right.

InactiveSomeone recommended to me that we use a blender and I have to say it is working pretty good… it seems to almost chop the cereal into smaller bits. We too use Dr. Brown – they are the best- with #2 nipples.
Are you making a batch or just each bottle? I think it works much better when you make a batch of formula and use warm to hot water when you make it. It seems to blend better and I think the cereal has time to soften/ dissolve more.
My latest “recipe” is: 24 oz hot water, 12 scoops formula, 16 tsp rice cereal. Blend in the blender. Then pour into a rubbermaid container that you can shake before pouring it into the bottles. Other than when we make daycare bottles, we tend to just make the bottles up as we need them…
The rice cereal ratio I’m currently using is 1 rsp cereal for every 1.5 oz formula. This was a recommended amount on a video that someone on here posted a link to.

InactiveI used 1 tbs of cereal (oatmeal) to every two ounces and I found that it did work best if I made the bottles a day ahead. I used a level three nipple and it worked fine. The y’s were too fast for Myles until he was much bigger.
Which brand and type of cereal are you using? I had trouble when I tried the Earth’s Best Organic. It didn’t dissolve as well as the Gerber brand, but it probably would have worked with the blender.

InactiveAidan had a ton of cereal in his bottle til last month, 1 tablespoon per 2 ounces, down from 1 tablespoon per ounce. I have always used the y cut (well not now, now he’s on the level 3, because I cut out the cereal).

InactiveThanks everyone for your help. I figured out that it was the brand of cereal that I was trying. I had bought the parents choice rice cereal and it doesn’t dissolve well. So I tried Gerber (which is what I had always used with dd) and it works just fine with the level 2 nipples:) Sometimes I think worrying about reflux takes brain cells away!!!!

InactiveJennifer,
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done something JUST LIKE THAT but not realized that it was that minor change that made the difference. I’m glad it is working better for you…

InactiveWe use Dr. Brown’s Y cut also, and we have found that they are all cut differently. Some are wider than others, so I have seperated them into narrow cut, and wider cut. I use which ever is appropriate for how much oatmeal I have added (usually 1 tsp per ounce of liquid, sometimes more).
Hunter would choke and I would get SO frustrated until I figured this out. I just eyeball the size of the opening, to determine if I have the right one. I hope this makes sense, I am kind of deadheaded…….
