InactiveHi everyone,
We decided the other day to try feeding Paige some oatmeal cereal. My pediatrician had once told me that it was the best tolerated cereal for sensitive babies. Well she seemed to really like it, and ate it quite readily. I made sure to buy one that had no milk products in it, and I prepared it with Neocate, not water. I only gave her about 1 tablespoonful, once a day for 2 days. Then on the third day she was quite irritable, and so incredibly gassy! She would scream and cry, out of the blue, and then pass so much gas. My question for you is, those of you who have babies that don’t tolerate solids well, what symptoms did your little ones exhibit? Does this sound like it could be due to the solids? Nothing else changed in her routine except that I fed her the cereal, and I’ve stopped doing that and the gas has now stopped. My son had no problems with solids, so this is new to me.
Thanks for your input!

InactiveI have not had any trouble with my little ones and the solids. I would say though – follow your gut feeling. Maybe wait a couple of weeks and try again. I started my kids on cereal at 3 months but they seemed very uninterested. They went to town at 5 months.
Hang in there.

Inactive3 months is EXTREMELY young to be giving solids, IMO. ESPECIALLY for a reflux baby. my son didnt get on solids until 9 months, and that isnt abnormal in the reflux world apparently. sounds like her digestive system isnt even ready to digest oatmeal yet.The american academy of pediatrics now recommends starting solids at 6-8 months, for these very reasons-digestive systems need to mature.

InactiveI tried Alana on cereal (rice and oatmeal) about 5 months. This sounds like her reaction and she had the most smelly and muciousy stools. (she was really only about 4 months developmentally as she was a prem). I decided to wait until after 6 months. The first couple of days I got the same response to rice cereal so I went to veges. She tolerated these fine. I reintroduced grains at about 7 months but still find I have to limit them…we mainly do veges and fruit. Its intereting that Drs continue to push solids before 6 month when the universal guidelines now seem to be 6 months.

InactiveI think I’d just wait a while before trying solids. Like the others mentioned, she’s pretty young and she’s probably not ready yet, which doesn’t neccessarily mean she is going to have problems later on.

InactiveI started Adriana on veg and fruits withing the past 2 weeks and have stopped because her reflux got worse and she started to refuse bottles. I am going to wait awhile.
But she does tolerate oatmeal fine. I use Beechnut or Earths Best Organic oatmeal.
Symptoms were that she started to refuse bottles, arching, and not sleeping well at all. She also seemed gassy.

InactiveWOW…3 months is young!
My dd is MFPI and cannot do any solids, we tried at 5 months and 6 and 7 and well then my ped GI told me to stop as it wasnt helping to keep trying…she gets mucousy, congested, has sleep apnea, her reflux is worse, her excema flares…not fun…so we are neocate only for a long time Im guessing…
that said….my ds reacted horridly to oatmeal back when we gave it to him…oatmeal can be allergenic, which is odd that the dr said it was best of the foods to intro…sweet potatoes or cooked pears are actually lower on the allergen scale than any cereal….when my dd can eat food we are skipping grains for awhile (we have history of celiac..no wheat/oats/barley/rye…)
I would hold off till at least 6 months for any food if not longer–especially if one is MFPI and not just MSPI (multiple food protein intolerance vs Milk SOy protein intolerance)

InactiveOatmeal often has cross contamination issues with wheat, so while the oats are pretty low on the allergy list, the possibility of wheat contaminating it is pretty high. Plus, as several others have said, 3 months is really young for solids.

InactiveThanks for all your input! It’s funny, everyone around me seems to be pushing me to get her on solids. I think I’ll listen to you guys and not try anything until 6 months. Does anyone know where I can find a list of least allergic foods, and what to try at what time? Thanks so much, my pediatrician is no help at all and I can’t get in to see the ped GI – I’ve been trying for weeks.

InactiveSheri, I’m surprised that your ped would tell you start solids. I agree with the others, wait until she is at least 6 months. Especially with your son’s history.
