InactiveI thicken Jenna’s bottles with cereal 4tbsp (5-6 ounce bottle) and she is on Neocate. Has anyone tried taking the cereal out? I would like too because she is eating solids now and would probably have a better appetite. I’m afraid though she will spit up like crazy again. Has anyone tried this? Any luck?

InactiveI wish I could answer this better. We only thickened with cereal for 2 days. Landen just couldn’t digest the cereal as a younger baby and once we were on neocate, everything improved so much we no longer needed to thicken (or maybe that does help answer your question
) I suppose you could give it a try. Landen is a silent refluxer that still spits up sometimes esp with all the crawling and pulling up/falling down/movements. But I know he isn’t in pain since he’s on the PPI, so I just clean up after him and let him play. He’s happy and the spitting doesn’t bother me since it doesn’t bother him. My 1st born was a PUKER til age 9 months and once he walked real good it stopped.

InactiveI just posted about thickening as well. How old is Jenna? We were on the Neocate without the oatmeal for about a month and he was spitting up a TON because it is so thin. Now that we are thickening, the spitting up has greatly improved but he isn’t eating very much. We are trying to get in some solids at least twice a day and it’s tough. How much does your little girl usually take per feeding with the formula? How many ounces does she take daily. Austin has never taken any more than 28oz but now he is capping at 20oz because he is so full.

InactiveHi Katie,
Jenna will be 6 months on the 20th. Neocate does seem alot thinner. I had to add more cereal to thicken her bottles. She drinks about 20-24 ounces/day and 5-6 ounces/feeding. If I get her to eat a good bit of solids then she won’t drink much formula. My doctor said she should get her main source of food from formula still and baby food doesn’t have many calories, so I keep wondering if she is gettting enough formula. My older daughter ate a ton when she was little so I didn’t worry. I’m sure the cereal makes her feel full. I’m just afraid that she is going to spit up alot if I take out the cereal. Before we started cereal, she was projectile vomiting. She is also on Prevacid, 30 mg/day. Was Austin uncomfortable when he was taking Neocate without oatmeal? I was thinking maybe the Prevacid would help her not get irritated. I’m not sure where to go from here…October 22, 2007 at 3:27 am #44575Anonymous
InactiveI just posted in another area about thickened feeding…we use Thickit 2 to thicken my daughters Elecare formula. It doesn’t bind to the liquid which enables the child to absorb the liquid and prevents dehydration.

InactiveI’ve never heard of Thickit. What’s in it? Is it a special order thing or available at the store?

Inactiveyou have to call around to some pharmacies and see if they carry it…you don’t need a prescription to get it. Costco sells it behind their pharmacy…you want Thickit 2…there is regular thickit out there, but thickit 2 is more concentrated. It’s great because like I said…with cereal and oatmeal, those tend to bind to the liquid and the child isn’t able to absorb the liquid they need for hydration. The thickit 2 won’t do that and the child won’t get dehydrated. Her pediatric GI told us to thicken hers with that.
Also, we have invested a lot of money in all sorts of nipples. We cut them trying to get them to work…the best ones we found are the Munchkin tri flow nipples. They have 3 flows, slow..medium and fast to choose from. Those are all we use now. -
