Hi there. How old is your son? This happened to my daughter during every feeding. When you say that he “chokes”, I assume that you mean that he’s coughing and gagging during a feeding. Are you bottle feeding or nursing? If you’re bottle feeding, maybe the flow of the nipple is too fast.
As I said, my dd did this A LOT and it was very scary. But be reassured that he can not actually choke on a liquid so his breathing should not stop. I used to think that Hailey wasn’t breathing during an episode, but the doctor we saw pointed out that she’s just trying to clear the fluid and to make sure that it’s going down the right way.
That being said, if your child is having breathing trouble or turning blue or sounding gurgly, then you should tell your doctor and ask to have both a feeding evaluation and a modified barium swallow done. While he won’t choke on a liquid, he can aspirate, meaning that the fluid is going into his lungs. My dd had problems with “choking” and gagging on her bottles, and in the end she needed thickened feeds to help with this. A feeding therapist- usually an SLP or OT- who does the test will be able to help you though it.
About the medications- the PPI did help with the coughing/gagging/choking during feeds. I don’t know why, but it definitely did.
Good luck.
