InactiveHi! In my quest to expand Sarah’s diet, I was curious about those three things. My best friend’s DH swears that babies shouldn’t have cinnamon because it can cause UTI’s. Is this true?
Also, is tuna safe for her to have? When/if you give it to your LO’s…do you make tuna salad (with mayo/relish/eggs whatever) or just give them plain tuna?
Finally, hamburger. This is one thing we have NOT tried yet. She’s OK to have beef, right?
Thanks!
OH and at what age is it safe for them to have honey? Like Honey Nut Cheerios, Honey Wheat Crackers etc…

InactiveHi Amy,
I have never heard that about cinnamon… as far as I know it’s fine to give them. Tuna and other fish is fine after one year, as long as you don’t give them TONS (it has a lot of mercury, I think). Shellfish however, should probably wait until at least age two… possibly three (depending on if allergies run in the family I think). She can have beef after 9 months. Honey is fine after a year, although recently I’ve heard that they can have “baked in” honey even before one year…I think that after age one they can basically eat anything but shellfish, soy and nuts & peanuts (nut butters). BUT, these guidelines seem to change frequently, so I have no idea what is true! Those are all of the things I’ve heard and gone by with my kids. Hopefully they’re true! You always hear so many different things it’s hard to know!

InactiveIf you’re interested you can buy tuna that’s promised to be lower in mercury from this source.
In any case, from what I’ve read tuna is fine as long as it’s not given more than once per week. My three all love tuna. I mix it with some mayo (just enough to make it stick together), diced pickles, diced celery and/or onion. A sprinkling of celery seed makes it super yummy! I either make them a sandwich or give them a small bowl of tuna and some crakers to scoop and eat. Even Myles does well with this and likes it very much. He also will eat it with a fork or spoon, but likes it better with crackers.I never heard the cinnammon thing.
As far as I know hamburgers and beef in general is fine for one yr. olds. Just be careful to cut tiny pieces. I always worry about choking with hamburgers because they are so dry. So I usually make cheeseburgers and put a thin layer of ketchup and mustard on top to give it some moisture. Maybe that’s not a good idea, to introduce ketchup so young, I don’t know…I think honey is fine after a year.July 21, 2007 at 4:13 pm #39686Anonymous
Inactivehi amy,
i looked up cinnamon and couldnt find and correlation.. so, i think its fine.. we give shane cinnamon almost every morning on his french toast…and honey is o.k after one as everyone else has said.and i give shane hamburgers too, not that he eats much of anything these days.. but sometimes i’ll get a bit into him. maybe it would be a good idea to try meatloaf? haha, i am thinking out loud to myself here too! 😉g’luck with the new foods!July 23, 2007 at 2:59 pm #39761Anonymous
InactiveThe only thing I can think of to be worried about with beef (other than choking issues) is that my ped. gastro. told me, when nursing my MPI son, to avoid dairy and beef. When I questioned the beef thing, he said “where do you think the dairy comes from …?” So, if your kid is MPI I guess I’d wait with the beef …

InactiveI used to make cinnamon toast and muffins for Seth all the time at Sarah’s age and never had any problems. I have never heard of a connection with UTIs.
Seth has also been eating beef for a while now too. They serve cheeseburgers at school and he now prefers the hamburgers over the chicken nuggets at McDonald’s. I also make meatloaf and spaghetti with the lean ground beef and he loves them both.I think the tuna is fine too in moderation. I have offered it to Seth before but he was not interested! I do think the cheap pink tuna has less mercury than the solid white kind. -
