InactiveThank you everyone for ideas.
I am also thinking that maybe he does need his dose adjusted. He
is currently taking 7.5 mg of prevacid a day divided into two
doses. I do give it to him 30 minutes before feeding and on an
empty stomach.Has anyone ever used prilosec for reflux?? A friend told me that her daughter used it.

Inactive7.5 mg…wow..!
my son was started on 24 mg of prevacid at 3 months..there is your problem i think.
we used prilosec but maxedout on the dose-my son was on 60 mg a day, so we switched to prevacid and he now takes 30 mg a day.
check your dosing at marci-kids.com.January 31, 2007 at 5:07 pm #23644Anonymous
InactiveI took my son to the doctor today. They took his weight…One
month ago his weight was 8lb 6oz today his weight is 8lb 9oz….he has
only gained 3oz in 4 weeks…..
The doctor changed is formula from elecare to neocate and continued the
same dose of prevacid. We also stopped the reglan due to possible side
effects. They did labs due to concerns that he is becoming
dehydrated…this is my worry also. He just does not seem to keep
anything down.We are also going to see a gi docotor tomorrow.. I hope to find answers soon.
It is amazing how everything else just does not seem important anymore.

InactiveI hope you have good luck with your GI appointment tomorrow. I would really push for a higher PPI dose. His dose is so low.
have you looked at the info on dosing at http://www.marci-kids.com ? It might be a good idea to print and bring this info along with you since many docs (including ped gi’s) are unaware of this current research that shows babies metabolize these meds 3-4 times faster than adults adn they need higher doses given three times per day.I hope the Neocate helps.
Yes, I know what you mean when you say nothing else matters. Nothing will until your little guy is eating and gaining. I wish you the best tomorrow. Please let us know how it goes.

InactiveGoodluck with your little ones appointment. I can remember when Alana was that age and how it just felt no-one was listening to me
and I knew something was wrong. Well it took awhile and I found someone- and kow things are great
. I will also join the chorus of the importance of the high dosage- ala marci-kids dosage. Let us know how you go.February 2, 2007 at 2:05 pm #23868Anonymous
InactiveWell just a quick update.
We went to the GI doctore yeasterday.
.They
have now added rice to his formula to help thicken it up. I have
noticed that it does stay down better. They also added mylanta
every 3-4 hours. He really does not like the mylanta. The doctor did not want to increase his dose of prevacid. She
said that his dose was as high as she would go at this time. They
also told us that if he does not gain weight buy monday he will have to
have a tube placed down his nose to feed him.

So we are trying to get him to eat as much as possible and gain weight. I really am hoping that he does not need the tube.
Has anyone had this done before? Or heard of it done?

InactiveHi Lisa,
I hate to be blunt but his Prevacid dose (7.5 mg divided into two doses a day) is so low that I would do everthing I could to find another doctor and get his dose increased before trying a feeding tube. I don’t think there’s a baby on this board who has done well on that low of a dose.
Tube feeding him is not going to stop his pain, nor is it going to prevent damage to his esophagus from the constant reflux of acid.

InactiveI definitely agree with Christine. I would find another doctor that will prescribe a higher dose. Maybe try a family doctor. With a high enough dose, he will likely start eating better, but even then there are things you can do before resorting to a feeding tube. My son has a feeding tube, but he started out with one. Meanwhile, to help her gain some weight, you can add powdered formula to her regular formula to add calories. This is what we do with Bryce. You’ll want to talk to a doctor or nutritionist about that.
Good luck with everything, and keep us posted.

Inactiveoh my gosh. 7.5 mg?? honestly, i truly feel that your baby might as well not even take the prevacid.
my son was started on 24 mg at 3 months and has done wonderful due to his adequate marci-kids.com dose.
please find another doctor for your babies sake.a feeding tube should be used as a last resort-meaning AFTER they have tried an appropriate dose of prevacid.
Dr Phillips has plenty of research that shows that babies need higher, more frequent PPI doses because they metabolize these meds so quickly.February 2, 2007 at 6:19 pm #23890Anonymous
InactiveLisa,
This all must be very confusing and frustrating for you. But I would agree with others that a feeding tube is a fairly drastic last resort if there are some less invasive options to try like a) playing around with the dose of meds- ie trying an increase (I’m just not sure of the rationale of trying something invasive-like a tube- without trying something less invasive like meds) b) increasing the calories of his feeds like Heather suggested with the help of a nutritionist.
Also, one of the little bubs in my mum’s group is a happy spitter and very slow at putting on weight (she is a day older than alana and three kilos lighter!!!). So they started her on solids early, and higher calorie feeds early and she is starting to do a little better. Admittedly they started the solids at four months, not as young as your little one. At no stage did anyone suggest to her tube feeding, so I wonder why they do this for reflux babes prior to other options being looked at?
This is all just really my thoughts, so really as his mum you need to trust your instinct and go with what you think is best
.He will probably get used to the mylanta- how do you give it- in a dropper- I think it was Christine (?) who suggested moving the dropper from side to side when giving it to decrease the chance of spitting it up.
Goodluck and let us know how you go.

InactiveThank you everyone for your support.
I agree that his dose of prevacid is much to low. I am really not wanting the feeding tube.
I am feeding my son every two-three hours in hopes that he will
start to put on weight. I am also adding extra powder to his
formula to give him more calories. The doctor also told me that
his reflux will be the worst at 4 months and then start to
improve. I cannot believe this reflux will get worse…..
.Right now his weight is staying the same. I take him to get a
weighed every other day. We will just have to wait
and see what happens. I see the doctor on tuesday. -
