Connection between teething and reflux?

I’ve read on this site several times that teething can worsen reflux. Why is that? I don’t understand how one would affect the other. Am I missing something?

I’ve seen a few theories posted. One that teething releases histamines,
which aggravate reflux. Another that teething (or sicknesses too) cause
the system to produce more gastric juices which in turn put more
pressure on the abdomen. Whatever the case is, we’ve definitely noticed
it… Particularly in the evenings for some reason.

I am not sure why but it really is true! We have 8 teeth here so we know all too well!

Also, there’s just so much more saliva when they’re teething, which just aggravates things. Also causes more choking and gagging (at least around here), though we still have no signs of any teeth at 9.5 months!!!! Where are they already?

I know the feeling, Lori, although Marisa is only 7 months and change,
not 9.5 months. But she’s been actively teething for ages with red
swollen gums and white visible below gums in a few spots. Today she is
also trying to eat her saucer legs and stroller and EVERYTHING. Wish
they would start to pop through already.

Anyone notice more gas when teething? Does Mylanta Cherry Supreme help with gas too, or only the Mylanta gas drops?

I called the GI doc today and the nurse said the teething can absolutely make reflux worse, something about the saliva and stomach acid, etc. She said to give 1-2tsp mylanta before bedtime bottle. Does anyone give that much mylanta at a time? I’ve only given her 1/4 tsp before. She weighs 17 lbs.

Does anyone know if the eye teeth are more painful than other teeth? Her first teeth were the bottom front two and they were painful but now her eye teeth are coming in and it’s a whole new level of pain!!
