InactiveI should add that we plan to do cod liver oil in the colder months where we won’t be exposed to sunlight as much. And fish oil in the summer months. I am trying to get a jump start on everything! 🙂

Inactivehave you considered flax seed oil instead? that is what i am doing. CLO mainly provides vitamins A and D with minimal omega 3s. flax seed oil has more omega 3’s. there are some issues with cod liver oil too, it made me a little nervous…..here is a thread:

and another thread:

basically if you do the cod oil, make sure to get a good brand…i think there are a few listed in those threads.

InactiveThanks, I will read those threads.

But doesn’t Flax Seed contain Omega 6’s which we get too much of in our diet anyway?

Inactiveflaxseed oil contains:
Flax Seed Oil is a blue flowering plant that is grown on the Western Canadian Prairies for its oil rich seeds. This natural oil (also known as Linseed Oil) is highly recommended for the general well being and whole body nutrition and is considered to be nature’s richest source of omega-3 fatty acids that are required for the health of almost all body systems.
< = Flax Seed Oil contains omega-6 and omega-9 essential fatty acids, B vitamins, potassium, lecithin, magnesium, fiber, protein, and zinc and also provides approximately 50% more omega-3 oils than what you could get from taking fish oil, minus that horrible “fishy” after taste. Sounded good to me already!

InactiveWe’ve used flax seed oil. They even have flavoured ones now, vanilla and butterscotch, and I’ve found that we can add it to yogurt if we need to without much protest.

InactiveI have no idea about giving cod liver oil… but i have done some research on the omegas etc… because of the latest research on the impact on speech ( i can go into this if you want because this is why Matthew may need it and why we are giving it)
Supposedly the best source of omega 3s for children is Nordic Naturals (ProEfa or complete 3,6,9)… flavored, Matthew will take it by mouth, which is amazing. I cannot remember recommended dosing but it is in the bottle (you can get the liquid or the gel tabs); the other one recommended because of its purity is Coromega… i cannot remember the name but it is the orange flavored packets. The omega 3 contained are usually EPA and DHA (same stuff as in formula).
I cannot remember why but i believe what i understood is that it does make a difference if you take the omega 3s from a plant (flaxseed oil etc, called LNA or ALA or something like that) vs an animal source (fish oil, EPA and DHA)… which is why people with apraxia for example take the animal source… again, i think this has not been proved but it is believed by some doctors… especially in the speech world. I never looked into why because the EPA and DHA are thought to work best in “my world”
