I HATE it when babies get a cold, Aidan’s on his second one, he had one about 2ish months ago. He’s not fussy or anything, eating fine, but if there’s one thing I can’t stand it’s snotty noses. Little noses saline does not do a darn thing for him, neither does the suctioner as nothing ever comes out ( but it’ll sure run out all the time sans suction). It’s my own fault, my 18 month old nephew came over a few days ago with a cold and ran over to give his cousin “anie” as he calls him a huge loving wet 18 month old kiss smack on the lips before I could get over to them-lol At least he loves his cousin!!! Night is (obviously) horrible as the cold aggrivates the reflux, forcing us BACK to the bouncer (which now almost touches the floor when he’s in it!) for sleep. I did get the ok to give him benadryl at might which I finally gave in and did around 2 last night. Amazing stuff, dried him right up and knocked him right out. Tonight he’s getting it right before bed so he’ll sleep in his crib…sorry for the long post I just hate it when babies get sick, when my older one gets sick, he can blow his nose, etc instead of becoming a lovely snot faucet!!! Luckily like I said Aidan seems unbothered by it until bedtime when the reflux kicks up.

I’m with you on hating colds in babies. I don’t mind as much with my older ones because they can cope much better. When Myles gets a cold (or when my girls did as babies) it makes me so darn mad. And I always blame myself, too. Myles is just getting over one and of course I feel it was my fault he had a cold. Maybe I didn’t wash my hands enough, or took him somewhere so he got exposed. Who knows? You can’t keep them in a bubble, but it is so frustrating when they get sick.
I hate, hate, hate the snotty nose. I call it the SNOT FEST, and my girls walk around saying, “when will this snot fest ever end?!” (I swear they sound just like me!).
Benadryl really is the only thing I’ve found that helps. If nothing else it helps them sleep when they don’t feel good, and I think it helps ease some of the nasal congestion. Also, Mentholatum is great stuff; milder than Vicks and not so strong smelling. I rub it under their noses to prevent that rash that often comes with a constant runny nose and wiping. I put it on their chests at night. I think it helps a little with the congestion, but it’s more a comfort thing. Definitely great for under the nose, though.
Keri,
Benadrly comes in a liquid form for children. I found the dose at Dr. Sears.com. Someone posted the actual link once but I don’t remember where or who. Maybe you can do a search to find it, or just see if you can find it at Dr. Sear’s website. Myles is 20 lbs and he gets 3/4 tsp. I only give it when he has a cold or is really incredibley uncomfortable with teething because I read somewhere that over use can lead to chronic thickening of nasal secretions (stuffy nose?).
May 25, 2006 at 12:00 pm #8618AnonymousInactiveok cool see I thought the dr was nuts when she told me to give Aidan 3/4 of a tsp..but he weighs close to 19 lbs so that must be right, I only gave him a half (I think I mean it was 2 in the morning but I know it was less that 3/4)maybe I’ll try a little more tonight, I hate hearing the poor little guy try to figure out how to breathe through his mouth!!! (I tried little colds decongestant and cough supressant but it made him MORe than cranky),and get this when I bought the infants cough and cold medicine I had to give them my birthdate!!!!! Aparently people are even buying THAT now to do not so legal things..I can’t believe the things people do these days!!! Thanks Christine, I was a bit worried about giving him the full 3/4 dose but it makes me feel better that that is what Myles takes and they are pretty close in weight….when he got weighed I made them do it twice I kept saying no this kid HAS to weigh more 18.10 aparently the bulk of the weight is in his legs!!!
Keri, try buying some pedialyte, it’s like “baby gatorade” and keeps them hydrated when they are going through their fun little eating refusal stages, I have the unflavored for Aidan, but they have flavored kinds too, I think they have pedialyte popsicles too.
May 25, 2006 at 12:47 pm #8620AnonymousInactiveMy almost 4 month old came down with a cold last weekend too. I took her to the doctor on Tuesday and he put her on something called Phenclor Tannate (must be a generic for something). It dried up her nose with the first dose. It can be given 2 times per day appx 12 hours apart. Has made her a little more tired than usual but she has been sleeping better and drinking much better. They said that the bottle can be kept for up to 2 years and I can use it whenever she gets a cold.
