InactiveMy preemie twins (now 3 months adjusted, 5 months actual) both have reflux. My daughter was failure to thrive but is now doing better on Zegerid (thank you marci kids & Dr. Phillips). I’m not sure about my son; he’s the different kind of refluxer…he generally eats to soothe. So whereas the dd takes 70cc, he takes 110cc every 3 hours.
Problem…my son has a terrible cough. I have listened to his lungs and so has pedi and father (adult MD). They sound clear. GI listed to lungs too and said clear. GI doc seemed more concerned with DD until she heard DS’s cough. She at first said 2 times day for Zegerid for DS; after cough, she said 3 times a day. So we’re all pretty sure its a reflux cough. We’ve been on zegerid and it has definately been helping DD. Its hard to tell whether any meds help DS b/c he doesn’t show typical reflux symptoms. His cough seems to be getting worse. If the meds were helping, wouldn’t the cough be getting better not worse? What can i do to help it?ThanksLaurenb/g twins born at 28.5 weeksgirl–zegerid 40 mg (4 tid)boy–zegerid 40 mg (5 tid)September 13, 2007 at 9:27 pm #42631Anonymous
InactiveI’m not sure about the cough getting better, buy both of my boys had a dry cough with their reflux. When I took my oldest son for testing, I was told by the person doing the test that if he had a dry cough it was most def. reflux. My older son had the cough the whole 9 months he had reflux, but then again he wasn’t on enough meds. Is your son on the marci-kids highest recommended dose? Maybe you could try some pepcid with the zegerid to see if it helps.

InactiveIf the cough is due to reflux, the meds may not actually help it. The meds most likely just reduce the acid in the reflux, but do not actually stop the reflux from coming up. So, if the cough is being caused by reflux aspirating into the airways, then meds may not actually help.
My DS had a chronic wet sounding cough during the day and dry sounding cough while sleeping. The GI dr did a Swallow Study on him, and found that he had developed a swallowing problem, and was aspirating often when he swallowed liquids, pureed foods, and any reflux that might come up. He didn’t cough necessarily at the time of aspiration, but just coughed a lot throughout the day. They said he had “Silent Aspiration”. Anyway, if you are concerned about this, you may want to check with the GI dr about getting a swallow test done or and an upper GI. These are two non-invasive tests that may give you an idea of what is going on.
Carter’s cough went away after proper dosing of prevacid, and thickening of all drinks and thin/pureed foods. We use “Simply Thick” honey consistency, and it has worked wonders.
