It was suggested to me on a food allergy forum that my daughter was exhibiting many signs of reflux. I had researched reflux as an infant because she would randomly wake, coughing and sputtering, but everything I found listed symptoms such as frequent spitting up, poop issues, etc. The pedi dismissed my questions (I’m in the process of finding a new pedi).
As an infant my daughter nursed CONSTANTLY, usually 2 hours apart during the day and 45-60 minutes at night. She spit up occasionally but not that often. She had hiccups all the time which have dramatically decreased but still occur. She’s always slept poorly (45 minutes max) and has had slow weight gain. She has apnea-type episodes which have lessened as she’s gotten older but are still happening. Yesterday I was lying near her while she napped and I had to poke her a few times because it seemed like she had stopped breathing. (We need a referral from the pedi to see specialists; the pedi says nothing is wrong so no referral yet)
She had two ear infections in the spring of 08 and then a long, almost constant string of them from July 08-October 08. Around that time I figured out a connection with dairy and we eliminated that from both of our diets. Like magic her sleep improved and the ear infections abated. I also determined that *I* have an egg allergy and she reacts as well so eggs are now out of our diet. Egg elimination has cleared up the constant spattering of red bumps on her torso.
Sleep is starting to go down hill and since the silent reflux suggestion I’ve been watching her more closely. She’s not aversive to food, still loves to to nurse. She usually gets a runny nose after eating. She’s crying in the night like she’s in pain and I wake up sometimes because it sounds like she’s throwing up. We just got over a horrible stomach virus so any vomit-like sounds make my heart race. I turn on the light to look at her and she’s still asleep, moving her mouth like she’s just swallowed.
Does this sound like silent reflux to you? I know that she’s not consuming any of the dairy/egg allergens so the screaming at night can’t be attributed to that. Of course I haven’t had her tested because again, I need the referral and the pedi refuses.
