InactiveJust wondering if anyone’s child has had to wear DAFOs?? Bryce had his PT today, and I asked her about Bryce’s outward-turned feet. She said she’d been keeping an eye on them and wanted to wait until he was cruising and up on his feet more to see if that made a difference. However, she watched his feet really closely during the appointment, and by the end of the appointment, she told me she wanted us to get evaluated by an orthotist, and that he’d probably need to be fitted for DAFOs.
She said not only are his feet turned outward more than any kid she’s seen, but his feet are “rolling” outward as well.Ugh. One more thing. I swear this kid has to try a sampling of every kind of medical problem out there (I know that’s an exageration, but it’s how I feel sometime). Anyway, I hope it’s something that will be easily corrected and he won’t have to wear them permanently.

InactiveI have know a few kids that had to use DAFOs for a short period of time and did great with them. It really help to walk a lot better with much better support. These kids keep on challenging us, once we thought we may have possibly figured them out BAM there is something new and different!!! Poor Bryce, first glasses to get use to and now eventually DAFOs!

InactiveI had to look it up myself! LOL It stands for Dorsum Ankle Foot Orthoses… so basically, they’re braces for the feet and ankles.
Sue,
That makes me feel better hearing your experience with those kids! I hope Bryce does that well if he needs to get them. Josh(dh) is going to start doing some massage work to see if he can improve the problem meanwhile.May 15, 2007 at 10:13 pm #33378Anonymous
InactiveOh, I’m sorry that you have yet another thing to worry about with Bryce. I hope it all works out and it’s not too stressful for all of you.
BTW…I probably should have worn dafo’s as a kid. My feet turn way outward and my step dad used to tease me and tell me I walked like a duck!
And Liza is always commenting, “Mommy, look your feet are in first postition!” (That’s ballet for feet turned outward!).I hope Bryce doesn’t end up like me.

InactiveI’m sure that things have changed significantly, but my brother wore something that sounds similar. Only, his was because his feet turned in so much that he constantly tripped over his own feet. They worked wonderfully for him.
