InactiveWe just got back from ped office for Ian’s one year visit. Everything went really well and we couldn’t be happier with Ian’s growth, development, etc. But we walked away from the visit a little depressed. The only food (seemingly) so far that Ian cannot tolerate is milk/dairy-we recently tried cheese and within 1/2 screaming, etc. However, some Maalox took care of it and no blood etc. So we were really encouraged that he was going in the right direction. However, ped told us today that if Ian cannot tolerate dairy/milk at one year, we cannot try again until 3 years. He also told us even then-that he will never tolerate it fully but rather will hopefully be able to have pizza -NOW AND AGAIN-. Meaning no cheese, milk, etc on a regular basis.
Has anyone else heard this? Anyone else been successful doing a dairy trial at 18 mo or 2 years? And if they did pass, were they able to eat cheese and yogurt normally?? I’m going to the allergist next month and will discuss with her but it just ruined my day! Thanks everyone-just clinging to the thought that I’ll hear positive news!

InactiveI haven’t been in that boat but just wanted to say that the allergist migth be a little more positive, and that even if they stil lsay that’s the case, you could trial it at 18 months and 2 years anyway? just to see? Also there’s a TON of alternitives to milk and dairy out there that are “milk” and “cheese” Maybe start looking into those? If you find that there are a lot of alternatives to milk and cheese etc then maybe it might lift your spirits???MAny hugs Tracy, I hope the allergist has more positive answers for you!!!

InactiveHailey did not tolerate milk until 18 months. All trials before that resulted in problems with her stools and fussiness. At 2 years old, she is eating cheese, yogurt, ice cream and drinking milk all together in the same day and she has NO issues whatsoever.
It’s interesting to me how doctor’s opinions vary on this topic. Hailey’s Ped told us majority of his milk intolerant babies can tolerate milk at age 2. I would personally do trials at 18 months and 2 years just to see.

InactiveAs Stacey said, it really is interesting to see how doctors differ on this. I think one difference may be if the baby has an intolerance or an actual allergy. Kaelyn recently had a checkup with the allergist. He said that we were welcome to do a trial whenever we liked. However, the longer we wait, the greater the chance that it will be successful. He said that in a large percentage of children with allergies, the allergy is caused by an immature GI tract. The less the GI system is irritated by the allergen, the quicker it can mature and they can grow out of the allergy.
So, he said that his ideal time for doing a trial is around 5 years, right before kindergarten. That should give her system plenty of time to heal and it’s an ideal time to try since avoiding allergic foods at school is so challenging. I know what you mean about leaving frustrated. I went in hoping to hear that we would challenge soon and left with a three year wait. However, on the positive side, he did say that 85 percent of children outgrow their food allergies by the time they are 10.

InactiveHi Tracey
I barely get any time to post anymore but I thought I would jump in here. We are doing a dairy trial at 18 months, it will be done over a 4 week period with butter first, then cheese, yoghurt and then milk. Our ped GI said not to be surprised if it doesnt work and that most babies aren’t successful until 2 years old. So we will see how it goes and if we have problems then we try again at 2. We were told that if he can tolerate dairy then things should be completely normal from then on, we dont need to limit his intake of dairy at all. The only things we have to wait on are nuts and seeds which will be closer to 4 or 5 years old.
It is so great that Ian is tolerating all other foods, it makes things so much easier. We continue to work through our list of foods and havent had any problems apart from some sensitivity to oranges. It takes so long to trial every food, I feel like we will never get there but things are so much better I cant complain.
Anyway, good luck with the dairy trial.

InactiveThanks everyone! THAT is sooo what I needed to hear right now. I know Ian may never tolerate it, but positivity gets you so much farther. I’m so happy for all of you that everything’s going so well!!
