daycare and PPIs

I am just wondering if anyone takes their child to daycare that doesn’t administer medicine. I just started Prevacid and do not know how I am going to work because my daycare doesn’t do meds. Right now I am giving the Prevacid and Zantac and need to space it just right so he can get all his doses the right hours apart and on empty tummy etc. I guess I am not looking for answers, just what is working for you. Does it get easier when the PPI is working properly? Do you give the daycare PREVACID 101 so they understand about timing the meals?

We did prevacid first thing in the morning and right before dinnertime so we could avoid the daycare issue. However, before she switched to prevacid, we were doing zantac. Day care was willing to administer it, but we had to work around their meds schedule. They would only give meds at 11 and 3. It was frustrating, but it worked out okay. I have to admit that we were really glad when she switched to prevacid (mostly because it worked so much better, but also because we were able to remove the day care issue all together). Good luck!

Wow that is crazy that they would say they do not administer meds. I have worked in childcare centers, schools, and community programs and they all had policies for administering meds. The state provides gridlines on how it has to be stored, recorded etc.

If you want to make a fuss I am sure you could press the issue. if you get a note from your ped. saying the meds are necessary. What they are doing is discriminating against children with health issues. If your child has a prescription it should be followed by the drs recommendations not by what is convenient for the day care.

You could call your state agency that is in charge of licencing and ask if the day care is allowed to do that.

I agree with katey!! I’ve worked in daycare. Babies should get their medicine when they need it. We always gave meds, at the time’s parents requested. I think you need to raise a stink at this daycare because what they are doing isn’t right.

I agree, it seems unreasonable in this day and age. They were very clear with the policy when I started my son stating they could no longer give meds. I don’t know if there was a problem, or insurance issue or if Pennsylvania has stricter guidelines. I debated not sending my baby there, due to this issue.

It is so convenient to have both my kids at the same place, where my eldest son loves his teacher. I am very lucky that I work for my husband now and can set my own hours. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I continued working as a nurse. I may have to either work 1/2 days until I can stop the Zantac, or drive down on my lunch break-it is only 5 min. away. Thanks for the advise.

When Seth first started daycare, we would let them give him his Prevacid and they always did fine (they used to always give Mylanta too). When he got older though and could wait the 30 minutes to eat, we started to give it to him first thing in the morning and that has worked out better. This way I know he is getting it on an empty stomach and it is was one less thing for me to send to daycare (not to mention all of the medicine forms I had to fill out!).

Since then, they have changed their policy – they too only give medicine twice daily at designated times. Luckily, I work on the same premises as Seth’s daycare and can go down and give him medicine if he needs it outside of these times. I feel for the other parents who do not have this option and I agree I don’t know how they get away with it. I know the “state lady” did encourage this practice. Her feeling (from what the director told me) is that if they are sick enough to need medicine maybe they should not be there in the first place which is total ignorance since some children obviously may need maintenance drugs for reasons other than being sick.

Good luck. I hope you find a way to schedule the medicine so it won’t be an issue.

While I found the fact that they only did meds twice a day to be really annoying, I actually do understand it. Most day care centers only have certain people that are allowed to give meds. If they are giving all of the meds at the same time, they are much less likely to miss someone. I used to work as an assistant director at a daycare and keeping up with the meds could be really challenging at times. That being said, our daycare had set times, but if a parent requested a different time for a medical reason, we always tried to comply. I think that our daycare would have adjusted to different times, if we had pushed the issue, but they had already been so great about all of Kaelyn’s other “special needs” that we decided to let it go.
