InactiveHi, My ds is 71/2 months and on 15 mg prevacid(2X day) and 1.5 zantac (3X day) weight 18lb. He ahd feeding aversion from third to fifth month( but I could sleepfeed him very easily ).When he entered sixth month things were getting better and better every day up to the point that he use to take 5 to 6 ounces of milk(allimentum) every 2 to 3 hours without being in sleep and happily and started to sleep through the night as well as remain happy most of the time(he was still refluxing thought).Till now he can not tolerate any solid.
My big concern is its being more than a month within a matter of day or two he became very gassy and fussy and bitting me everywhere( I did not see any teeth during this time). It seems to me that he is uncomfortable swallowing any thing and when I tried to sleepfeed him he took one or two seep and turn the head aside or some time burp after evry seep and give up sucking.he had four teeth till now and was very crancky when he had his first pair but was not gassy and I wad able to sleepfeed him easily. He is not spitting up or not having diariah.two week back I put him on 30 mg prevacid(2Xday) for two weeks with no improvement. So I went down to 15 mg again.I took him to ped GI who does not have any clue about whats going on him and asked me to try probiotic(I have not tried it yet). His sleep were also disturb but not that much or not very bad. Please give me some advice to figure out whats going on with him…
.Any advice will be greately appreciated.
Tamara.

InactiveHi. I’m not sure i understood this from your post, but have you started solids with him or not? Has the gassiness started since trialing solids? Have you tried any new foods with him lately? This would be the most common reason for the reactions that he is having.
Also, teething certainly causes a flare in reflux for many of our little ones. It does for my little guy.And I would try the probiotics. They seem to help my son. But, you may want to try a milk free version. Read the labels carefully as many probiotics are grown on milk.September 25, 2007 at 7:28 am #43259Anonymous

InactiveTamara,
I also have a silent refluxer (1 yr last week) and he seemd to do much better once we introduced solids. He was on 15mg of Prevacide 2x a day and Alimentum with a little juice. I slept fed him during months 4-5 and that included 8 tsp of rice cereal in the bottle as well. It looked like thin cereal and he tolerated it well. BUT, after a bout with the flu he would only take pedialyte and then he would only take the Alimentum when I took out the cereal. It was then that we started solids. He was never a spitter and didn’t like solids very well in the beginning. But, once we started with lunch for a week, then lunch and dinner, for a week, then working our way up to 3 meals a day, things got much much better. He started gaining weight well and the bottles got easier. His teeth didn’t come till he was 11 months old but I know he was in pain for at least a month before they poked through. Perhaps your son has a couple of things going on. He’s ready for solids regularly, has teething pain, and isn’t hungry. I know my son gave me the hardest time when I tried to feed him and he just wasn’t hungry. Try crackers/teething biscuits…no liquid, and see how he does. My son went crazy of cheerios and Gerber puffs.I was extremely hesitant when I started him with solids because of the reflux, but it turns out for him it worked out well. He got interested in eating. And it became a fun thing rather than a painful thing.Just my 2 cents, janetSeptember 25, 2007 at 2:35 pm #43281Anonymous
Inactivejanet,Thanks for your reply.I know my son is ready for solid and he is extrmely interested in it…the problem is the whenever i feed him solid(no matter what) he became gassy and fussy and reflux more friquently as areasult he refuse bottle more and more.Thats why i stopped it for a while.I am glad to hear that solid work well with your kid.It breaks my heart when he cry & want to eat the food we eat.I also hoping that he behaviour of bitting me is because of teething not because of irritation. But this is going to be his third pair of teeth…last two pair of teeth did not take that long to pop up.TamaraSeptember 25, 2007 at 2:51 pm #43288Anonymous
InactiveMany refluxers just aren’t ready for solids. There are quite a few moms who waited until into the 9th month before giving them to their little ones. Other moms have found that the premade baby foods don’t work well, but if they make them themselves, their baby can tolerate it better. Maybe this is an option? Have you tried any other solids or only the pears?
As for teething.. My Ben is the textbook for the erratic teether. He was over 10 months old before he got his first tooth… it took a month for the second one to come in.. then he got 3 more in about 3 weeks, and then waited 3 more weeks and is just now cutting the 6th one.September 26, 2007 at 3:04 pm #43367Anonymous
InactiveTamara,
I really wish I had answers for you to help your baby’s pain. It’s the hardest thing in the world when your baby is in pain. I know I spent many days and nights without food and sleep. When he didn’t eat, I didn’t eat.I would see if your doctor would up the dose and see if he needs an H2 blocker as well.A lot of mothers on this site recommend an antacid…Mylanta Cherry Supreme, I believe is the name of it. Can anyone speak to this??I’m glad your son is at least interested in solids…that’s a start. The desire is there. Just know that you’re doing EVERYTHING in your power to help him. When you’re feeling down and scouring the internet to find out answers, know that you’re a good mother that will figure out a solution this feeding mess.My heart is with you,JanetSeptember 26, 2007 at 8:02 pm #43373Anonymous
InactiveTamara,
I’m sooooooo sorry reflux has reared it’s ugly head at your house. It’s the pits and so heart wrenching watching your baby suffer and feeling so helpless. You are doing such a great job looking for solutions and know that your baby knows you’re doing everything you can.Mylanta cherry supreme is what a lot of us use. It helps coat the throat but it does cause the runs with a lot of babes so be watchful. I think you start with 1ml 4xday but I could be wrong so correct me someone if I am. It might help untill you get a higher dose if that’s what you guys need. With solids remember there’s nooooooo problem with waiting. I didn’t start solids with Kate untill 6 and a half months and even then got many a look from my ped and other moms when they were horrified to find out she wasn’t on cereal at 4mo.
Whatever. She still can’t tolerate cereal. Babies main source of nutrition during the first year should come from formula/bm anyway. I hadn’t known that! Anyway, we’re here for you! It helps to not feel so alone.

InactiveI’m so sorry you are going through this. I agree with what the others have said and wanted to chime in. Landen started solids at 5.5 months and it didn’t work out. We just restarted them at almost 7 months and this time instead of jarred food, I am making it myself (no preservatives and extra absorbic acid added to fruits, etc) and things are going much much better. Maybe the next time you do decide to trial solids, you could try making your own food. Try http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com if you are interested.
I can also tell you that the last 2 months have been the worst for us (minus his newborn months when we were unmedicated and undiagnosed) b/c he is crawling, teething, had RSV and now I think an ear infection….Just the crawling and teething alone is aggravating the reflux.Hang in there! It will get better!!
