InactiveFor the good days to end. I guess this could also go in boohoo, I def need a shoulder to cry on, but I am also just baffled.
Sunday night, Landen started coughing, gagging and puking. He is normally a silent refluxer, so I was really confused. The 2 “newest” things for him were carrots and MiraLax. I suspected the glycol in the Miralax, but his GI said it was probably the carrots. Then I just wonder if he has a stomach bug. I took him to the ped this morning b/c I’ve NEVER seen him this bad (he’s hoarse and still coughing a dry cough and sooo irritable) and he has thrush!! Could thrush in his mouth cause bad reflux?Prior to this, he had been on apples w/o a problem for about a week and a few days. But now I wonder about them too. his GI said 3-5 days is plenty of time to find an intolerance, but now I wonder….of course, I stopped everything. Apples, carrots, miralax. And all we are doing is neocate and a little bit of oatmeal. He’s still spitting a lot but seems to be a tad bit better.
I’m scared to continue any solids now, but then again, if it is just a bug or the thrush, I hate to deprive him of foods he can have. Any ideas?August 28, 2007 at 11:07 pm #41851Anonymous
Inactiveour ped gi told us that ANY illness can make the reflux worse. i would guess that since he has a cough, that it is probably the most likely culprit for the increase in the reflux. thrush, however, can be a real buggar to get rid of if it is not treated properly. sylvia had oral thrush and i had thrush on my breasts. i could not get them treated at the same time for one reason after another. finally, her oral thrush seemed to be gone, but she was refusing food, chewing food and then spitting it out, and also making a funny noise in her throat. i asked the family doc if she could have thrush and itnot be obvious. he told me no. i asked the ped gi the same question, and he said, “yes, it could be in her esophaguse.” he decided to go ahead and treat her on that assumption and skip doing a scope—especially since i still had it on my breast, it seemed like a no-brainer. he also told me to quit nursing. sylvia started to eat, sleep and gain weight and she quit spitting out her food and she quitmaking the funny noise in her throat. the next time sylvia was given antibiotics, we just went ahead and gavae her diflucan when the antibiotics were done.
if your doc has given you nystatin for thrush, you may have trouble getting rid of the thrush. diflucan is a far better medication for thrush.
one of my older twins also had esophageal thrush—-with no apparent thrush in her mouth—-this one was scoped and we could see the white lesions all over her esophagus.

InactiveUggg…how discouraging.
I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it was the thrush causing his problems with reflux. Liza had thrush once as an infant. She was not a refluxer and she was the easiest most placid baby on earth but when she had flush she was miserable. Her doctor agress with Christine….nystatin is not the best option….Diflucan is much better. It worked very well for Liza. I hope you got Diflucan for him, and I hope he’s feeling better soon. I’d try the food trials again after the thrush is gone.August 29, 2007 at 3:49 pm #41888Anonymous
InactiveThanks so much ladies. I have no idea what I’d do w/o this board. I’m willing to bet it is the thrush. He was doing so very well with the apples and carrots. And he is making throaty/growling/gurgling noises that you described your babes had with the thrush. I was given nystatin. UGH! surprise surprise. I called back just now to the nurse to call me back so I can ask for diflucan. I was called out of work today to come get Landen. I assume I’m going to be home with him until the thrush is gone. He is absolutely miserable and my heart is broken. esp after seeing him so happy!

InactiveOh Jill. I’m so sorry! I hope the thrush clears up quickly. I know that http://www.kellymom has several recommendations on how to clear up thrush in an infant. Also, try using a probiotic. It will help get the yeast under control again. Putting the powder right onto his tongue would work!
