alright i didnt tell everyone this because i was hoping to post in the hooray section! shane has actually been off his meds for over a week. we were my inlaws for the holidays, he slept there and we didnt give his meds.. he seemed fine, and we just thought we would see how it goes with none. and he has done exactly the same! happy, eating, ect. only as some of you know, still not napping well, and squirmy sleeping. the GI nurse thinks he should still be on pepcid just incase of any irritation, because he still has reflux that comes up in his throat a lot. would you guys put your babys on meds if they wornt crying and eating fine? or does the sleeping thing and the fact that he is till refluxing warrant meds still ?
and i starting switching him to isomil today. (i was going to do goats but for some reason he will not drink it)we cant afford the alimentum and still not sure if he needs it.. its making us broke. the goodstart trial went ok, but he was spitting up more and it was curdled and his poop looked funny. sooo now we are trying soy(never did) and i dont know if i should wait to introduce the pepcid back in, and give the soy some time first or not.
phew! that was tiring. thanks for reading this.
December 4, 2006 at 3:11 pm #19529AnonymousInactiveok 4get the soy part.. i just came across a couple scary articles on soy.. soo i am going to try and get him on something else soon.. not sure what. but here is one of the articles if you are interested http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/infant.html .. if your not please dont click on it, i dont want to get anyone upset.
December 4, 2006 at 3:42 pm #19532AnonymousInactiveI am not putting you down so don’t worry about what I am going to say. My oldest son was on soy as an infant and has always been in advanced classes. He is very much a boy or he is 16 so he is almost a man. But I still think that if any formula makes you uncomfortable you shouldn’t use it. I didn’t use soy with my other two boys. I also heard those stories after I had my last two so I am glad they were not on soy. I still think its your own choice and you will hear of plenty of babies who were given soy did fine and have grown fine. As far as the meds I think the only reason I would give meds is because to reduce the chance of any damage. Good luck I know its hard to decide.
December 4, 2006 at 9:16 pm #19553AnonymousInactiveI’ve read a lot of the scary soy stuff and it really does concern me. There’s so much out there that we don’t know about food safey. Even cow’s milk is not the best thing for our kids anymore because of the hormones, pesticides, and antibiotics that these dairy farmers use. I buy organic milk when I can afford it and worry a lot when I can’t.
I hope you can come to a decision about what to feed him that you are comfortable with.
As for meds, I would definitely keep my baby on meds if he was refluxing. I would worry too much about damage that could be done without meds, but that’s just my opinion and what I would do. And, yes I absolutely think that poor or fitful sleep is a sign of that a reflux baby is uncomfortable.
December 4, 2006 at 11:27 pm #19566AnonymousInactiveI’ll answer your question!!! Give the new formula more time! No really, do what you think is best…I just don’t want you to end up back in the “now which one actually worked” boat that I’m still in!
GOOD LUCK!!!
AmyDecember 5, 2006 at 5:39 am #19573AnonymousInactiveWhatever you end up doing, I would also reccomend trying one thing at a time. One idea would be to keep with the Goodstart and add the med. Maybe try for two to three weeks and then if this doesn’t work add something new (like a new formula). If you go the meds, I would probably go the PPI- they seem to be the most effective so if you are going to do anything you may as well do the best.
You could try and persist with goats if you would really like to go that way. If you mix some goats with goodstart do you think he would take it? Or even with Allimentum? Then you could slowly reduce the amount and hope his palate adjusts. I might get some horrified gasps at this one, but maybe you could add some brown sugar to the goats milk to make it more palatable and reduce it over a couple of weeks (gasps from the dentists- but only for a couple of weeks…). Watch for loose stools though- it is a little laxatie. Just a couple of ideas if you would like to persist with goat. Or, maybe he would drink it eventually if he got hungry enough…OK only joking- weird Aussie sense of humour!!!
Sorry you are both having such a hard time.
December 5, 2006 at 9:06 am #19577AnonymousInactiveJust throwing this out there, but the date on that particular article is from 1999. If there was a real concern, wouldn’t the ban on sale of soy be enacted by now? Have you found any more recent research – just curious? We are going to be taking Abby off her Alimentum soon and I am trying to decide between soy and milk based so if you have any more links, I would love to read them.
Thanks!!
Robin
December 5, 2006 at 9:40 am #19580AnonymousInactiveIf you would like to keep trying the goat’s milk, something you can try is adding banana baby food to it. About 1/2 tsp./oz. We’ve been doing this with Bryce, more as a thickener, but I’m sure it helps with the taste. Our OT actually suggested this, and said they do it even with really young babies. I wasn’t thrilled about giving Bryce fruits first (I always gave veggies before fruits with my other kids), but it works 🙂
Anyway, just an idea.
December 5, 2006 at 10:34 am #19584AnonymousInactiveohh thats funny w/the banana i never thought of that. i think part of me is even a little nervous w/it as well.. just because i feel “safer”w/ a formula. i actually broke down and i am taking shane to a naturapath doctor on thursday.. hopefully he will have some insight.
Robin :w/the soy, i think there are a couple more articles on line, just put in soy formula and bad or whatever and some will pop up. its hard to decide on what to believe in.. its crazy there are so many different views.
December 5, 2006 at 11:17 am #19587AnonymousInactiveI think that every other day they come out with new things to be worried about (LOL)…I think I read somewhere that humans were never meant to drink cows milk (organic or not) and that they should be breastfed until at least 4-5 years of age and then drink water and other juices. …can you imagine that in the US? My mom put my brother on solid foods at 1 month of age becuase that is what the dr told her to do…and he turned out OK Really, I think you have to do what you think is best for you and your baby.
As for the meds…my daughter was always a happy baby…in fact the only way we knew she had reflux was because of her sleep,…(.she still to this day has a hard time with her naps,) but that was enough for me to put her on a PPI…I just wanted to make sure she was comfortable…I had to fight to get her on it though, becuase she did gain weight and was so happy when she was up, no doctor would believe me that she had relux…I am so happy I did put her on it though.
December 5, 2006 at 11:32 am #19590AnonymousInactiveoh what was she like when she slept, did she cry or only seem restless? and did the meds help her sleep a lot better? they never really helped him w/sleep, maybe its because he wasnt maxed outshanesmom2006-12-5 11:36:58
December 5, 2006 at 12:59 pm #19599AnonymousInactiveHi Lauren — I realize that you don’t know me…as I’m an oldtimer who is not around a lot, so you can take what I have to say of course with a grain of salt. I honestly don’t have any advice about the formula, but I can tell you what I think from our experience with meds.
We tried Palmer off meds a couple of times. The first time right at a year was a disaster — we knew immediately (within days) that the reflux was still really bothering him. The second time was at 20 months — we weaned him slowly from 22.5mg prevacid a day over a period of almost 2 months (we were a bit leary after the first failed med-free trial). We thought he did great, he was sleeping, eating, happy, etc. Then about 6-7 weeks into the med-free period he got a growly whine, became very picky about eating, etc. But he was 2 — so we figured that was all it was…2 year old behavior. And besides the growly whine he was a happy, active 2 year old.
Then I watched him sit up in bed one night, reflux, whimper, and go back to sleep, and we said “ahh, ha!” Less than a week back on the prevacid and the growl was gone and he was eating well again. I’m still not sorry that we did the med-free trial because at least we had verification that he still needs it.
So, I guess that moral of the story is that in my experience med-free trials are not a bad thing. Go with your gut. If you think he’s doing alright and you are comfortable for awhile longer seeing if the meds aren’t needed then go with that. Just promise yourself not to beat yourself up (for trying without) if he needs to go back on them. That’s something I also learned from experience isn’t really worth it.December 5, 2006 at 9:43 pm #19654AnonymousInactiveHonestly, the meds never really seems to help her nap better, but did help her sleep at night better. I think she was still refluxing, and could feel it, but it wasn’t painful, just annoying…she was so happy when she was up, I have just gotten to the point where I don’t worry about the naps (she sleeps 11-12 hrs at night). I think you have to go with your guy too,…you can always put her back on…we tried to wean Brianna at 9 months (we had her on half a dose) and I just felt inside that it wasn’t the right tiime, so we stopped…I never look back, only forward, because that is all you can do. Good luck!
December 5, 2006 at 11:51 pm #19659AnonymousInactiveLove the new photo Lauren.
