InactiveHi everyone, I know I already gave the long story about what’s going on with my son (in the “introduce yourself” section), but I’m at my wit’s end!! WHY do people and Dr’s act as if reflux is this common everyday thing for babies, they act like it’s NOTHING. My son vomits ALL DAY LONG. He cries all day long. The worse part is, I know he’s in PAIN all day long, and none of his dr’s care about this right now.
We took our son, Harrison, to a neurosurgeon because of the closing of the sutures in his head. We told him how he vomited all the time, and that he’s been diagnosed with both a milk protein allergy, AND reflux. He YELLED at us and said that his vomiting was NOT important right now. But there is nothing that he can do for my son until he is a few months older!
Why can’t we work on the refulx problem BEFORE we work on the head problem! Why should he be stuck vomiting for months, or possibly a year, until they can do surgery on his head?
I’m just frustrated, I KNOW we have to go to new dr’s, but I’m tired of finding new one’s, getting the referals, then trying ALL over again. Please wish us luck! Have any of you faced this problem with dr’s not caring about reflux??

InactiveGosh I am so sorry to hear all of this. We have not had any problems with any of our docs really so I can’t give you any advice. I will just pray that you find someone who will listen to you soon.

InactiveOh that is tough!!! The doctors probably have a right to be more concerned about his head BUT they don’t live with Harrison day in and day out to see the extent of his reflux problem!
We were lucky that Sarah put on quite a screaming show every time we went to the doctor so she got to see for herself how awful daily living was. That is not true that they can’t help him until he’s older and its unfortunate that he feels that way. In a few months you could be WAY worse off by having esophagus damage…a feeding aversion…you name it! It’s not fair to Harrison OR your family to prolong this mess any longer. I truly hope that you are able to find a doctor that will listen to you. I know its exhausting to see doctor after doctor…but keep pushing!
Have you checked the thread in the forum called “Finding a GI doctor in your area?” Moms posted about good GI docs where they live. Maybe you could browse through there and find one close to you that you at least KNOW will take his reflux seriously.
Good luck and BIG hugs!

InactiveYES, we have also dealt with our pediatrician not putting enough importance on Caden’s colic and reflux. It was so frustrating to be told that it was normal for babies to have reflux and to cry as much as he did. This being our 4th child, we know it’s not normal, but we still had to convince our ped to let us try Prevacid 30mg, because he was not wanting to do that at first.
The Prevacid never helped Caden, but if I had known as much then as I know now (thanks to this site!) I would demand Zegerid at the Marci-Kids dosage in order to attack the reflux as full force as possible, because Prevacid was difficult to adminster since I breastfeed and can’t time meals very well.
As much of a hassle as it is, it sounds like you need to find another doctor who understands what you’re going through. A lot of moms on this site have had better luck with family doctors prescribing PPIs for babies, because they deal with adults who have reflux and know how painful it can be. That may be something to consider…
I wish you the best of luck!

InactiveSheesh! That guy has a real attitude problem. While I can understand his concern for your son’s head, a doctor should be concerned about the patient as a whole, and not just concentrate on one thing when multiple issues exist. I think a family doc or a new pediatrician to deal with Harrison’s reflux might be a good idea. It would be horrible for your poor son to put off treating his reflux until after his head surgery.
I’m sorry that you are going through this right now. I hope you can find another doctor to take your concerns more seriously. Family docs are often more sympathetic about reflux because they see adult patients with reflux all the time and these adults can tell them how much it hurts.
My son also vomited all the time, but his weight was fine. Is Harrison on track with his weight gain? If he is you can assume that despite the constant puking that he is still getting adequate nutrition. But of course he still needs some medication to control his reflux pain. I hope an pray that you find someone to help you soon.

InactiveI don’t have much to add but I agree that waiting could cause damage and possible feeding problems. I agree with everyone else and think you should find another doctor. I have acid reflux and if someone told me that I would have to wait a year to take my prevacid I would want to die. It is so painful and I can’t believe a doctor would want to put a child thru that. Good luck I hope you can find someone.

InactiveHoly cow, you guys can’t catch a break! I’m so, so, so sorry to hear this but to be honest, I’m not that surprised. Our situation was sooooo similar. I’m sure I told you already but I switched peds three times because I kept running into the same brick wall ” it’s just colic. they’ll grow out of it.” It was so frustrating. Before our whole reflux rollercoaster I was a REALLY timid non-confrontational person. I had to come to a point and realize I am Kate’s ONLY advocate. All she can do is cry and I was NOT going to let some doctor tell me that she would just grow out of it
She was crying for a reason. If I didn’t stand up for her, who would? She was suffering. I KNOW you are doing all you can for your son and it makes me so angry that doctors act like it’s no big deal. IT IS!!!! My only advice is to keep pushing. It’s so exhausting but you WILL find someone who will listen I pray. Listen tou your mommy-insyinct with all your heart because it is more reliable then anyone with a PH.D. Truly. You WILL get through this and how lucky little Harrison is to have a mama like you
