InactiveI’m sorry you’re going through that. I’ve really never heard of such a thing. I had my epidural taken out and reinserted 5 times with Sarah, and redone once with Hailey. I’ve never had that problem. I didn’t even know that could happen since it doesn’t touch your spine. What did your doctor say about it? Is it possible that you’re having low back pain i.e. a disc problem? It’s very common to have low back pain after having a baby b/c you develop abdominal muscle weakness and core instability if you got big enough, and those are the supporting muscles to the low back. Then add carrying a heavy baby around all the time. I’d personallly talk to your doctor about it and ask for a referral to a physiotherapist. They should be able to help you. Good luck.

InactiveI’ve never heard of this either. My epidural had to be attempted 4 times before the doc got it in right with Cooper, but I haven’t had any problems. I know that sometimes if they hit a nerve you can have a spinal headache a day or so after it is removed and then they do what is called a “blood patch” to get the bubble out and then you have no more problems. A friend of mine had that with her last child. But those are the only complications I have heard of. I hope you start to feel better.

InactiveWith Alexis my epidural was not placed very well. I had back pain/soreness/achy with sitting for long periods, coughing, carrying her for long periods of time as well, it lasted for 4-6 months then it finally went away with the more activity I did to stretch my back muscles out. With Taylor the epidural was great no problems after it was taken out.

InactiveHmmm… I had an epidural with my daughter, and had no back pain. I didn’t have one with Ben and did have back/spine pain for quite some time after he was born. It hurt just as you described too. I think he bruised my tailbone when coming out, so I’m sure that contributed to the pain. I just assumed that it was from carrying him around all the time, me not eating enough on the TED, and just being tired. It took a LONG time for the tailbone to stop hurting.

InactiveThat sounds awful!!! I was in chronic pain in my breastbone after Carter was born (no idea why my breastbone) but after a year (YES A YEAR OF PAIN) I was fed up. I finally got my PCP to refer me to a pain clinic. They did a series of 3 cortizone shots right in the area of the pain, and after the third shot I am pain free!
Not sure if that would work for you as well, but most people get the cortizone shots for spine pain not for what I had, but it happened to work for me, too.I think I would ask the doctor OB, or PCP, if that might be an option for you. Being in pain is very frustrating.Hope you get some relief!!Ann MarieAugust 22, 2007 at 4:22 pm #41524Anonymous
InactiveGabbs, I actually have heard of people having back problems after epidurals. My first pregnancy I went to a chiropractor and had no problem with the epidural (even though I felt Ariella coming out, ouch). See if you can go to a chiro to adjust your spine or something of that sort. You may just need a little adjustment. Good luck and I hope you’re feeling better soon.

InactiveI’ve never heard that either. I did have epidural with my first and my second was a home birth with no meds. Believe it or not the second birth was so much better than the first. You could always go med free if you want to have another one. Most women don’t think they can do it, but trust me if I can anyone can. I am the biggest baby in the world. I stub my toe and walk around just sure I broke it.
Going natural is the most empowering feeling and is such an amazing experience. Besides the fact that you feel so much better. I listened to some hypnotherapy cds before having Justice and I really think it helped. Just know that many women before us did it. I also went in saying there would be no other option that I was staying home unless something happened and I had to go to the hospital. That is why I did epidural with my first. I was in labor for 2 days with my water broken with my first and labor just wasn’t progressing, so we decided I needed to go and in that case I did the epidural. I needed to sleep since I hadn’t for 2 day and couldn’t do that on patosun(sp). Oh, is it possible it is the same hospital that other women are reporting this from? Maybe find another person to do the epidural and defiantly talk to a dr. about it and see what they say.August 23, 2007 at 12:26 pm #41543Anonymous
InactiveI had an epidural with my son, reinsurted about 3 times, and afterwards i suffered horrendous back pain for months, right in the spot where my epidural was injected. It is actually very common, and my naturopath has convinced me to never get an epidural again (well the pain did too). sweetcheeks2007-08-23 12:26:30

InactiveI applaud everyone who went natural!!! I never even entertained the idea… I figure that I get freezing to have dental work, so I was definitely going to need it for childbirth. With Hailey my epidural stopped working because I progressed so fast from 5-9cm. I begged them to top me up, afraid that I would deliver and feel it all.
