InactiveI am primarily breastfeeding, but I’m not able to pump enough out when I work to hold Coda over. She’s allergic to both the dairy AND soy based milks~ she projectile vomits, screams, gets gassy and has the explosive watery foul stools indicitive of protien sensitivity ( BTDT with my DS).
So, the ped suggested nutramagen or the similac version~ but isn’t it dairy based? if she’s reacting to the protiens, how will it help?
I was fortunate enough to exclusively breastfeed DS with his DSPI, but with her, I have to work at least part time.

InactiveYes, those formulas (Nutramigen and Alimentum) are dairy based. The proteins are broken down so some babies do well on them but for severe cases of MSPI babies usually need Neocate or Elecare.
Here’s a link that explains the differences between the two.

Good luck.

InactiveThanks for the link~ Laura is such a wealth of info!
My DS could not tolerate ANY of the store bought formulas. He was pretty severe in his symptoms, even to the point of losing weight instead of gaining. We tried the neocate for him briefly, to try and allow his gut to heal, but he flat would never accept any substitute~ the GI thought it best he ate something,so he helped us continue to nurse. I did remove ALL offenders from my diet to breastfeed him~ stripping my diet to fresh veggies, rice and chicken.
She’s done so beautifully~ gaining wonderfully on breastmilk~ but my supply is going down the tubes. 🙁 I’m hoping that she will tolerate it for just one bottle twice a week, possibly 2 bottles twice a week until she’s old enough to eat solids. Right now she still isn’t interested in solids or ready.

InactiveIf you’re not totally wiped out with working and taking care of your children you can try some things I did to increase my supply when I was pumping. My refluxers would not nurse so I pumped exclusively and bottle fed. Since I pumped I always knew how much I was producing and I could tell when supply was dwidling.
Here are some tricks I used that worked very, very well to increase supply.
*Pump in the wee hours of the morning when supply is highest. I used to get up at 3 or 4am and pump and then go back to sleep and pump again at 6am. Your milk supply is highest in the early morning and tapping into this supply really helps.
*Pump after nursing her, even if your breasts are empty. When you pump for an additional 2-5 minutes after the flow stops, you tell your body to increase supply because baby is not getting enough. Do this every time you pump and you’ll probably see your supply go way up.
*Cluster pumping. Once per day (usually in the am) I would pump 3 times in 4-5 hours. Again this tells your body that the baby is not getting enough so it will increase production.
I know it’s a lot of work, but it really works and you can slow down once the milk supply increases. I increased my supply from 30 ounces per day to 55 ounces per day by doing this for a few weeks.
About the Neocate, most moms here say that it’s best to mix it gradually (like 1 ounce at a time) with whatever they are currently drinking until they get used to the taste. It’s probably a good idea to get her used to it now while she’s still so young because they are more resistant to new tastes as they get older, and you sure don’t want her to refuse it when and if you are no longer producing enough milk for her.
Well, good luck with everything.

InactiveI started mixing the neocate 1/2 & 1/2, because I had some nutramigen left, but the dr said just go to neocate cold turkey, and my daughter seemed fine with it. The first day it may have seemed different to her, but after that she was fine. It looks like your little one and my daughter have the dame bday, which is neat, so you may also be able to gauge off of her.
