InactiveDoes anyone have any idea how much oatmeal per ounce the Dr Browns “Y cereal nipples” can tolerate?? I am sooooo tired of experimenting and ruining many, many nipples with my razor blades!! I am looking to decrease the amount of cereal added (I now add 1 Tbs/ounce and cut my own nipples), and would like to buy the Y nipples without having to manipulate them. Thanks!!

InactiveThe Y nipples were too fast for Myles until he was 6 months old (or older) even with 1 tablespoon of oatmeal to every two ounces of formula. I didn’t want to thicken anymore than that so I used a stage 3 nipple and slit the hole slightly to make it flow right. It was a serious PITA because as time went on the hole would get bigger and I’d have to make a new one. I know that doesn’t help much. Sorry.
I hope you find a better solution.

InactiveWe also couldn’t use the Y cut because the flow was too much. We used the level two with just a bit of oatmeal, but others have used to level 3s and they’ve worked well. I used to also feel like a mad scientist with all the bottles and nipples and formulas and trying to find a way for the formula to get through! But once you get it right, it becomes second nature and it’s not so hard. Good luck.

InactiveWe’ve used the Y cut Dr Browns for my daughter for about 1 month, she’s now 4 months old, and they’ve been fine. Some bottles go down faster than others, but usually it’s not a problem. We do 1 T Rice cereal per ounce of Neocate, and could go a lot thicker with the nipples.

InactiveUnfortunately, a lot of it has to do with the baby as well. Kaelyn had an incredibly strong suck, so the Y cut nipple was too fast for her until she was close to a year old (even though we were thickening with a TBSP of cereal per ounce of formula). She used a Level 2 nipple until she was 6 months old. On the other hand, Alexandra has a very weak suck, so we were afraid to thicken at all.

InactiveOkay… I tried 1 Tbs of oatmeal per 2 ounces of neocate with the Y nipples and she could not suck it through… she only took 1 ounce and gave up! So, I cut it bigger and we were a little more successful, but not much! Perhaps she is disliking the new consistency?? AHHH!
One project leads to another! Anyway, thanks for all the “nipple” help. January 17, 2007 at 8:15 pm #22547Anonymous
InactiveThe oatmeal cereal is not as fine as the rice. Maybe try blending it in a blender to make a more even consistency. I used to have a problem where the consistency seemed fine and flowed properly but then a clump would clog up the nipple. The blender may help with that. I found that making his bottles ahead of time helped. The consitency seemed better if it sat in the fridge over night. It’s all trial and error. So frustrating
but eventually you figure out what works. What brand of cereal are you using. I tried the Earth’s Best Organic and gave up because it would clog the nipple no matter how much or how little I used, but Gerber Oatmeal worked fine. So, I used Gerber for bottles and Organic for spoon feedings. Just throwing that out there on the off chance you are trying to use the Earth’s Best like I did.

InactiveI do use gerber. I will also try to blend it to make it finer. That’s a FAB idea! Thanks!

InactiveYou’re welcome! I learned about that FAB idea here! I would have never thougt of it myself.

I hope it helps.

InactiveJust wondering… I have the Y cut Dr Browns, and the first pack I bought is cut bigger than the 2nd pack I bought. My daughter can’t get anything out of the 2nd pack of nipples that I bought, so I’ve been washing & reusing the 1st pack that I bought. How did you cut the nipple to make it larger? I don’t want to ruin it!

InactiveDenise,
I just used a really sharp hair cutting scissor and snipped a tiny bit to make it slightly bigger. But I did this with a stage 3 nipple, not a Y cut. Maybe it would work with the Y nipple as well.
It’s so frustrating when manufacturers don’t make their products uniform. If you buy two packs of Y cut nipples, they should be the same!

InactiveHI mamas,
I wanted to offer my two sense. I use the Dr. Browns with the STANDARD size vent aire by playtex nipples, DS like the “slow” flow when he was smaller with cereal, but now he requires it to be thicker and uses the fast flow. They are all “y” cut and I have found them to be uniform in size.
Also, when we were trying to figure out which consistency to use and were butchering a ton of EXPENSIVE dr. brown nips, we used the cheapy evenflo nipples in there and they worked the same and were like 2.97 for 6 nips instead of 2.47 for 2 like the dr browns are..
HTH someone!

InactiveThanks! I’ll try cutting the “Y” a little bigger…did you resterilize them after you did that? We use the wide neck bottles from Dr Brown’s, or else I would use the Ventaire in a second! Does anyone know any other nipples that may fit the wide neck Dr Brown?
I just read my original question, and could I have said “that I bought” any more times? It was kind of late when I wrote it after a loooong day!

InactiveI didn’t notice the “that I bought” thing at all and probably no one else did either. I don’t even preview my posts anymore because I try to squeeze this part of my life into tiny little time slots in my day when my three angels are either sleeping or happily entertained, so I can only imagine how some of my posts sound.
Anyway I used the narrow neck Dr. Brown’s so I don’t know about any other nipples that would work. Maybe the Avents since they are wide bottles too. Also, Walmart is now selling a wide neck dr. brown type bottle. I forgot what it’s called; probably Parent’s Choice.
And no I didn’t re-sterilize them after snipping them. I’d just wash them in hot soapy water, but I didn’t sterilize for any of my babies. My doc didn’t think it was necessary.
Good luck!
